  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - TALAT - JOINT MEETING

UN Undersecretary-General for political affairs Ibrahim Gambari announced here Friday that Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat have accepted his invitation for a joint meeting on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after his second meeting with President Papadopoulos, Gambari said he had invited both leaders for a meeting tomorrow, together and he was happy to confirm that this proposal for a meeting has been agreed to.

He said the idea is to really find ways of moving forward.

Invited to comment on proposals he had received from both leaders, Gambari said as you know, I am here to have a series of conversations and consultations which I have had during the course of my visit here. And those conversations will continue».

The only thing I would like to add is that they are very useful proposals, we are considering them and in my judgment, I believe that the proposals contain elements that will answer the possibility of further discussions together, he said.

The UN diplomat noted I have invited his Excellency, Mr. Papadopoulos and his Excellency Mr. Talat for a meeting tomorrow together and I am happy to confirm that this proposal for a meeting has been agreed to.

Gambari said the idea is really to find ways of moving forward so that we can begin to start some of those processes, perhaps at a technical level but also to address some of the substantive issues.

The meeting, Gambari added, was agreed to be held at 3.30 Saturday.

    [02] P5 GAMBARI - CYPRUS

The UN Security Council five permanent member -states expressed hope that in his contacts in Cyprus, UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari will find willingness to demonstrate the necessary political will and flexibility to move forward.

The Ambassadors of the SC permanent member-states to Cyprus met with Gambari, who is holding a visit to the island in a bid to to sound out the situation on a possible resumption of the dialogue on Cyprus.

In a statement read out to the press by French Ambassador to Cyprus, Hadelin de La Tour Du Pin, the P5 ``reaffirmed their commitment to a comprehensive, lasting and just solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.``

``They encouraged all Cypriots to take this opportunity to relaunch dialogue and reassured all Cypriots that the P5 will continue to support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to secure an agreed way forward,`` he added.

    [03] HOUSE PLENARY HELICOPTER CRASH

The plenary of the House of Representatives observed a minutes silence in memory of the Cypriot airman and the Russian instructor who lost their lives on Wednesday during the crash of the National Guard MI-35 helicopter near Paphos.

House President Demetris Christofias said the tragedy recalled the two previous National Guard air accidents which resulted with the death of important members of the Cyprus Army, including National Guard commander Evangelos Florakis.

Let us hope that the investigations underway will be able to show the cause of the accident so that based on their conclusions all necessary measures can be taken to lessen the chances of similar tragic incidents, Christofias added.

The Speaker told members of the House that his Greek counterpart, Anna Psarouda Benaki, sent a telegram, expressing her regret and support over the death of the two airmen.

Christofias also extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

Investigations continue at the scene of the crash of the Russian MI 35, which killed both members of the crew, Cypriot Flight Lieutenant Andreas Papasozomenos and Russian pilot and trainer Yuri Oleynik.
