[01] MILITARY HELICOPTER - CRASHA Cyprus National Guard helicopter crashed this morning in the western district of Paphos. Two pilots, a Cypriot and a Russian, were on board the Russian-designed Mi-35 helicopter. Both are dead.The Cabinet adjourned its regular weekly meeting because of the helicopter crash. President Tassos Papadopoulos went to the National Guard Headquarters in the capital Nicosia to be briefed on the details of the crash. Defence Minister Phivos Klokkaris, National Guard Commander Lieutenant General Constantinos Bisbikas and Parliamentary Defence Committee President Yiannakis Omerou went to the area where the MI35 helicopter crashed. This is the third accident involving a National Guard aircraft. On July 10, 2002 the Commander of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis, and four other army officers were killed when their helicopter crashed near the southwestern town of Paphos. In another incident, two airmen were killed on 10 September 2005 when their PC-9 crashed in Kolossi village, west of the southern coastal town of Limassol.
