  • [01] GREECE - RUSSIA - CYPRUS QUESTION

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis departs today for Moscow, for contacts with Russian officials on issues of mutual interst, including the Cyprus problem.

Bakoyiannis will represent Greece in the Conference on Drug Combating, taking place in the Russian capital.

During her stay in Moscow, Bakoyianns will meet on Thursday with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and with other Russian officials.

During her meeting with Lavrov, Bakoyiannis is expected to discuss Greco-Russian relations, the question of Cyprus, Turkey`s European course, as well as relations between the EU and Russia.

    [02] CYPRUS - TURKEY - UN - PROTESTS

Cyprus has protested to the United Nations the mass violations of its national airspace and Nicosia FIR by Turkish military aircraft, during the period 16 March - 8 June 2006.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Cyprus` Permanent Represnertative to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, strongly protests the violations by the Turkish airforce, calling for an end to this practice, which threatens air security in the area. The Cypriot diplomat stresses that such acts do not help the mission of Good Offices of the UN Secretary-General in the search for a solution to the long-standing Cyprus problem.

He notes that Turkey continues to flagrantly disregard international law and UN Security Concil resolutions, following a partitionist policy, thus blocking progress in the efforts for a peaceful solution. Mavroyiannis urges the Secretary-General to exert his influence towards the Turkish government to avoid such acts that deteriorate the already tense atmosphere and deepen even further the gap between words and deeds.
