  • [01] UN SECRETARY GENERAL - CYPRUS QUESTION

The United Nations are working with the parties in Cyprus with a view to prepare the ground for the commencement of a new peace process, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said.

Annan referred to the Cyprus problem responding to questions during a joint press conference he gave Tuesday with French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.

The UN SG was asked whether the new Human Rights Council offers an opportunity for resolving European issues such as the Cyprus problem.

Annan referred to UN Undersecretary General for political affairs, Ibrahim Gambari`s visit to Cyprus on July 6, adding that he had always encouraged the two parties to show political will for the settlement of the issue.

The UN SG recalled the referenda on April 24, 2004, on his plan for a Cyprus settlement, approved by the Turkish Cypriots and rejected by the Greek Cypriots.

``In order to achieve everlasting peace, the two communities must get involved, but the two leaders did not have the opportunity to meet for two years now,`` Annan added, noting that ``we work with them, we encourage them to work together on a number of projects to prepare the ground so that maybe in the future we can resume a new peace process.``

He also expressed hope that after his return from Cyprus, ``Gambari will bring such information which will allow me to determine whether we will proceed or not.``

``But that will depend on his report,`` Annan concluded.

    [02] CMP - EXHUMATION PROGRAM

In view of a current shortage of funds, the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) has decided to launch a small-scale exhumation program, over a period of two months, beginning in mid-August.

In a press release, the CMP announces that having carried out all the necessary preparations, is eager to launch its project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains of Missing Persons. It believes that its two-month program is a step in the right direction.
