EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli Rehn reiterated the Unions demand that Turkey opens its ports and airports under the flag of all EU member states, including the Republic of Cyprus, which became a full EU member on May 1, 2004.

Turkey should open its ports to vessels under flag of all Member States, including the Republic of Cyprus. As set out in the Negotiating Framework, the opening of accession negotiations on the relevant chapters depends on Turkey`s implementation of its obligations to all Member States under the Association Agreement, he said.

If we want to avoid a major problem in the autumn, Turkey needs to stick to its word, he noted.

The Commissioner pointed out that there is an alternative to a major accident, provided the parties in Cyprus stop complaining against past injustice and rather work on future solutions with a pragmatic approach.

In statements before the European Parliaments Committee on Foreign Affairs which discussed today the draft report on Turkey, Rehn said that because Turkey is a negotiating country, our expectations of Turkey have naturally increased.

    [02] CONSTRUCTION WORKERS - STRIKE

Construction workers in Cyprus decided today to go on a 48-hour strike on June 27-28 in the event employers and workers do not agree on the issues concerning the renewal of the collective agreement in the sector.

The construction workers are already staging today a 24-hour strike and during general assemblies today they ratified a proposal for a 48-hour strike next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Antonis Vasiliou expressed regret over todays strike, saying that despite all efforts done by his Ministry, the strike did take place.

He announced that tomorrow a meeting will take place between the interested parties (employers and workers) during which an effort will take place to bridge the gap so that further strike is avoided.
