Voting in the elections for the new members of the House of Representatives and the parliamentary representatives of the three religious groups, namely the Armenians, Maronites and Latins, continues, with the turnout of voters by 12:00 local time, when the polling centres closed for an hour`s break, being 48%, compared to 56% in the 2001 parliamentary elections.

Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides said that if the voting, which is mandatory in Cyprus, continued at the same rate, then only 85-88% of registered voters would have cast their ballot by 17:00 local time, when polling stations are set to close.

Savvides said all voting centres were operating smoothly and that there was a turnout of 45% by 12:00 local time in the Nicosia district compared to 56% in the parliamentary elections of 2001. In Limassol it was 49% compared to 58% in 2001, in Famagusta 46% compared to 53%, in Larnaca 46% compared to 54%, and in Paphos 54%, which was the same in 2001.

The Chief Returning Officer noted that the ballots would be counted at the polling stations and that the voters` preferences for MPs would be concluded after midnight and announced in the early hours of Monday.
