EU ministers adjourn meeting on Turkey

Luxembourg, Oct 3 (CNA) -- European Union Foreign Ministers have adjourned their meeting regarding the start of accession negotiations with Turkey scheduled for Monday, to allow time for consultations with a view at reaching agreement on Ankara's negotiating framework.

During Sunday's meeting, which lasted until the early hours of today, Austria raised objections, saying an alternative option for a special partnership with Turkey must be included in the text, should membership talks fail.

Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou had a meeting here Sunday with his British counterpart Jack Straw with regard to the EU presidency's opening statement and reaction in the event of an ''unacceptable'' Turkish response.

Mainly fine weather is expected with local cloud. Gentle to moderate, westerly to northwesterly winds will be blowing during daytime, expected gentle during nightime. The state of sea will be slight. Maximum temperature 29 to 31 C inland, south and east coasts, 27 to 29 C over west and north coasts and 21 to 22 C over Troodos mountains. Minimum temperature 17 to 19 C inland and over the coasts and 12 to 14 over Troodos mountains.

Outlook for Sunday and Monday 06/10/200 to 07/10/2005

Mainly fine weather is expected, with local cloud. No significant change in temperature.

Cypriot plans for military manoeuvres still in place, Spokesman says

Nicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the programme of the ''Nikiforos'' military exercise has not changed, noting that it was up to the Greek government to decide whether or not to carry out its exercise, ''Toxotis'', by the Greek armed forces.

He assured that if the two exercises were not to be carried out together, as in the past, it did not mean that the joint defence pact between the two countries ceased to exist.

Cyprus has reservations on Turkish statement and framework

Nicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that Nicosia had reservations regarding a possible statement by the Turkish Foreign Minister in the event that Turkey begins accession negotiations with the EU.

The spokesman also said that Nicosia maintained its reservations about amendments to the clause in Turkey's negotiating framework that Turkey must stop vetoing the participation of EU member states in international organisations.

He added that the Republic of Cyprus had clear positions on both issues, noting that there had been many efforts on behalf of the British EU presidency to find a way out of various pending issues and that the Cypriot government was ready to handle any eventuality.

Luxembourg, Oct 3 (CNA) -- As intensive consultations continue among European Union Foreign Ministers on Turkey's negotiating framework, Cyprus and Greece have told their European partners that no change can be made on the document at this stage, apart from the points issued by Austria, given that the text had already been agreed on.

After a night of intense consultations between the Presidency, the Commission and Austria, which still holds reservations about the wording of the document relating to the EU capacity to absorb new members, and the ultimate goal of negotiations with Turkey, another issue of Cypriot concern seems to have emerged.

Morphou citizens to hold an anti-occupation march

Nicosia, Oct 3 (CNA)-- The citizens and the municipality of the occupied since the 1974 Turkish invasion town of Morphou will march Sunday 9 October to Astromeritis check point, a few miles away from their occupied hometown, to reiterate their wish to return to their ancestral homes.

Mophou Mayor Charalambos Pittas announced here today the programme of the ''Days of Morphou'' events organised for the 25th time since the Turkish invasion. The events will be attended by personalities from Greece, Malta, France, Brussels and the United Kingdom.

Cyprus Spokesman: Wording of paragraph 5 should remain unchanged

Nicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) --- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides clarified today that the Republic of Cyprus has not asked for any amendments in paragraph 5 of the EU - Turkey negotiating framework and expects that the wording of the paragraph will remain unchanged.

Invited by CNA to comment information that Nicosia has asked for changes in paragraph 5, Chysostomides said ''Cyprus expects that the wording of paragraph 5 remains exactly as agreed upon by the 25 EU member states, almost two weeks ago''.

Nicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) Armenian people cannot accept silence around the Armenian genocide by the Turks, Armenian Culture and Youth Affairs Minister Hovik Hoveyan, noted here today, adding that Turkey has problems with its history.

Armenian Minister, on the island for an official visit, was received today by President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias and met with Director of Cypriot President's Press Office Marios Karoyan, to whom he expressed his willingness to further enhance the excellent relations between Cyprus and Armenia.

Luxembourg, Oct 3 (CNA) -- Unanimity is close here as regards at least the settlement of the objections raised by Turkey to clause 5 in the negotiating framework, according to which Ankara must align its policies with the European ones as regards the accession of EU states to international organizations.

According to diplomatic sources, consensus is sought through a statement by the 25 clarifying the obvious, namely that the organizations maintain their autonomy. However, developments, if any, on the Austrian front are still not known.

Demining operations continue in buffer zone

Nicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) --- Demining operations continue in Cyprus buffer zone and on Tuesday landmines will be disposed in the area of Barsak, near the church of Panayia Palouriotissa, in Nicosia district.

Since November 2004, the project funded by the European Union with four million Euros, and executed by UNDP, has so far cleared, more than 591.306 square meters, and located 2.242 mines, a UNDP press release said.
