    Greece says Turkey must meet obligations in EU course

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) - Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has stressed that a country cannot expect to open accession negotiations with the European Union and at the same time not meet its fundamental obligations, noting that ''this is a position of principle which we will not forego.''

    Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, on the occasion of the Salonica International Fair, Karamanlis said ''it is necessary that Turkey fully respects the commitments it has undertaken towards the EU and one of these commitments is the signing of the protocol'' extending its customs union to the ten new EU member states.

    Three day mourning for officers killed in military plane crash

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus National Guard has decided to observe a three day mourning after the crash of a small training plane on September 10, which resulted in the death of two military officers, Flight Lieutenant Ferreos Kouloumos and Flank Officer Fotis Constantinou.

    A press release issued by the Defence Ministry said that during the three day mourning, September 11-13, flags would be flown at half mast at all military campuses, observation posts and other National Guard installations.

    House President criticises British stance on Cyprus

    London, Sep 12 (CNA) - Cypriot House of Representatives President and General Secretary of leftwing AKEL political party Demetris Christofias has criticised the stance of the United Kingdom regarding the Cyprus problem and called on the Greek community in Britain to step up efforts towards changing this stance.

    Furthermore, he called on the people of Cyprus to make a joint and collective effort to defend the Republic of Cyprus and create the preconditions for a settlement of the political problem the soonest possible.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sept 12 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Tuesday (September 13) and Wednesday (September 14) the weather will be fine with some temporal clouds. Winds will prevail katabatic, light 2 to 3 beaufort over night, while during the day gentle sea breezes, 3 to 4 beaufort, are expected.

    The minimum temperatures will range between 14 to 20 degrees centigrade and the maximum between 26 and 35 degrees centigrade.

    The state of sea will be up to slight.

    On Thursday (September 15) and Friday (September 16) clouds are expected to develop resulting in local showers during the afternoon, mainly over the mountains and inland. Temperatures are expected to drop.

    De-mining operation in Cyprus continues

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- The Mine Action Centre in Nicosia started today a de-mining operation in a new minefield in Kaimakli area, in Nicosia.

    This is the fourth minefield to be cleared by the Centre since the launch of Phase II of the Programme on the 12th of August, and the 17th since the beginning of the programme in November 2004.

    Cyprus says French points for EU counterstatement positive

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides confirmed today that the EU British Presidency and France held consultations on the content of a counterstatement to be issued by the EU as a response to Turkey's declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus, noting that the French government immediately briefed the Republic of Cyprus on these consultations.

    ''We have been briefed on the points on which France has insisted,'' he said, adding that Cyprus thinks that these are positive.

    ''Whether they are enough or not is something to be examined,'' he noted, recalling that this issue will be discussed on Wednesday at the Committee of the EU member states' Permanent Representatives (COREPER).

    The Spokesman noted that Cyprus' diplomatic services aim at achieving the best possible result to protect the interests of the Republic of Cyprus and expressed hope that the content of the counterstatement will make possible its unanimous adoption by the EU ''without offending the rights of the EU in general, or of an EU member state or of the Republic of Cyprus.''

    CoR and UCM sign declaration

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- The Secretary-General of the European Union's Committee of the Regions, Gerhard Stahl, and the Secretary-General of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, Athos Germanos, have signed a declaration of common interest aimed at enhancing cooperation between their administrations.

    Under the declaration, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) Secretariat agrees to include the Union of Cyprus Municipalities (UCM) among the national associations which are invited to take part in the regular structured dialogue between the President of the European Commission and associations of regional and local authorities.

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi expressed hope that the Cyprus problem will soon be solved and that the settlement will satisfy the needs and wishes of all Cypriot people.

    Receiving the credentials of new Cypriot Ambassador to Rome, Stavros Epaminondas, Italian President made as special reference to the ''excellent relations between Cyprus and Italy'' and underlined his country's readiness to further enhance those relations, an official press release says.

    Cyprus Port Authority and TAIEX organise ''Motorways of Sea" seminar

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA)--- The Cyprus Port Authority in cooperation with the European Commission's Office for Technical Assistance Information Exchange (TAIEX) organises between 14 and 16 September a seminar that will deal with the Commission's programme for ''Motorways of the Sea in the Mediterranean''.

    Around 60 delegates from Cyprus, Croatia, Malta and Slovenia will participate in the seminar that will take place in the coastal town of Limassol.

    Britain and France reach agreement on counterstatement

    Brussels, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Prior recognition of all EU member countries is a necessary component of accession to the European Union, the Union's draft counterstatement to Turkey's unilateral declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus will stress, according to diplomatic sources in Brussels.

    According to the same sources, the Union's British Presidency has reached an agreement today with France, regarding the wording of paragraph 5 of the draft counterstatement.
