Cyprus House President addresses Second World Conference of Speakers

Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA)-- The international law and the United Nations resolutions should guide the international community's efforts towards the solution of long-standing international problems such as the situation persisting in the Middle East and Cyprus, Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias said today.

Addressing the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Christofias pointed out that sixty years after the victory against fascism, ''the world is still caught in the throes of wars, conflicts, social injustice and poverty which take a high toll of human lives and cause widespread suffering and anguish.''

Cyprus accelerating pace of agreement on energy and oil with Egypt

Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA) Cyprus is accelerating the pace for implementing an interstate agreement signed with Egypt to explore, evaluate and possibly exploit oil deposits and natural gas located in the Cyprus coastal area.

Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister George Lillikas, who returned earlier today from Egypt where a relevant protocol was signed in the field of energy and oil, described his visit as very productive.

Lillikas said that cooperation with Egypt will extend to technology and tourism and that the government of Cyprus is negotiating with other neighbouring countries such as Syria, Lebanon and Israel for exclusive economic zones.
