    New York, Sep 7 (CNA)-- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias is in New York to attend the 2nd World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, organised September 7 - 9 by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the UN Headquarters.

    The Conference will deal with the challenges of the 21st century and the role of the parliaments. The conference aims at projecting to the UN an overall view, at the highest level, of the contribution of the parliaments globally to the enhancement of the multilateral system and the promotion of peace, security, democracy, human rights and development.

    EU-Turkey agreement on immigration necessary, says Cyprus

    Larnaca, Sep 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus Interior Minister Andreas Christou has said that Nicosia wants the European Union to conclude an agreement with Turkey on illegal immigrantion, to ensure that Ankara eliminates and controls the trafficking of immigrants through its territory.

    He also said the government had achieved important changes in 2004 and 2005 with regard to combatting illegal immigration and dealing with asylum seekers.

    Cyprus FM expects no agreement today on EU counterstatement

    Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said he does not think there will be any agreement today at a European Union ambassadors' meeting on a counterstatement to Turkey's declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

    Iacovou said another informal General Affairs EU Council is expected to take place on September 26 to discuss Turkey's negotiating framework and the implementation of a protocol extending EU-Turkey customs union to the ten new member states, including Cyprus.

    Invited to comment on press reports that the latest draft of the EU British Presidency is worse than previous ones, Iacovou said ''I am sure yesterday's draft will not be on the table today and will not be submitted today in the form it had yesterday.''

    Czech official to visit Cyprus for talks

    Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for EU Affairs of the Czech Republic Vladimir Mueller arrives in Cyprus tomorrow for a working visit, during which he hold official talks at the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    During his three-day visit, Mueller will be received by Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and on Friday he will hold talks with Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Sotos Zackheos. He will also meet with President of the Standing Committee of the House or Representatives on European Affairs Nicos Kleanthous.

    Cyprus sees increase of asylum seekers in first half of 2005

    Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) - Cyprus, Malta and Slovenia saw major increases of asylum applications during the first half of 2005 according to a UNHCR report on the asylum level and trends in 36 industrialised countries (31 European and five non-European).

    In Cyprus there was in increase up to 26% (4,044 applications), in Malta 103% (549 applications) and Slovenia 38% (858 applications). Cyprus accepted the largest number of applications among the ten new EU member states.

    Cyprus and Egypt sign petroleum co-exploitation protocol

    Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) - Cyprus and Egypt have signed a protocol on petroleum co-exploitation and a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of Technology, Information and Services.

    The documents were signed in the context of Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lillikas' visit to Cairo, at the invitation of Egypt's Tourism Minister Ahmed Al Maghrabi.

    Cyprus participates in CPA Conference

    Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) - The combating of poverty, hunger and Aids, the relief of third countries' debts, as well as UN goals for this millennium, are amongst the issues discussed at the 51st Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference, taking place in the Fiji Islands.

    Cyprus is represented at the Conference by the Parliament's Director General Kostakis Christoforou and Members of Parliament Christos Mavrokordatos, Eleni Theoharous and Sophocles Fittis.
