Cyprus President departs for USA

Larnaca, Sep 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said he has not discussed with the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan the appointment of a special representative for the Cyprus issue, adding that such an appointment is not imminent.

Kofi Annan ''is continuing his efforts'' towards this direction and has already prepared a shortlist of candidates for the post, said the President, noting that the final decision lies with the Secretary General.

European Parliament Plenary begins work in Strasbourg

Nicosia Sep 5 (CNA) -- The European Parliament's plenary session begins work in Strasbourg today.

The Members of the European Parliament (MEP) will debate the natural disasters that have afflicted the continent over the summer, and discuss airline security, following the recent spate of accidents. The MEPs will talk about the financing of the Galileo satelite navigation system.

Cyprus President: air crash investigations are on the right track

Larnaca, Sep 5 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said the government is on the right track with regard to the investigations aiming at finding the cause of last month's crash of an Helios Airways Boeing 737, that killed all 121 people on board.

Papadopoulos stressed that the government is determined to get to the bottom of this tragedy and see where responsibility lies, to meet public demand.

Head of the Greek Investigating Commission on Air Accidents and Incidents Akrivos Tsolakis, speaking on departure from Cyprus, said Commission members had gathered enough information and vowed before the Cyprus people that they will spare no effort to answer all the questions relating to this tragic accident in order to find the cause or the possible cause.

Cypriot Ministers to participate in JHA Informal Council

Larnaca, Sep 5 (CNA) The Ministers of Interior and Justice and Public Order Andreas Christou and Doros Theodorou depart on Wednesday for Newcastle to participate in the informal meeting of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers of European Union member states and the four candidate countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Croatia).

The Vice-President of the Commission for Justice, Freedom and Security, and representatives of the European Parliament will also participate in the meeting which is held every six months, hosted in the country of the Presidency.

Cyprus to send aid to New Orleans

Nicosia, Sep 5 (CNA) The Cyprus Republic will send 50.000 US dollars to New Orleans to help towards alleviating the suffering of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Announcing the Council of Minister's decision, Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said ''we respond positively to the call of the Secretary General to offer help''.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Sept 9 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

On Tuesday (September 6) and Wednesday (September 7) the weather will be mainly fine with some local cloud in the afternoon. Winds initially, will be northwesterly to northeasterly with a gentle breeze, gradually shifting from the southwest to the northwest. At night a gentle breeze will blow from northwest to northeast.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of 32 to 34 and a minimum of 20 to 21 degrees centigrade inland, maximum temperatures of 31 to 32 and a minimum 20 to 21 degrees over the coast and maximum temperature of 20 to 22 and a minimum 12 to 14 degrees over Prodromos.

On Thursday (September 8) and Friday (September 9), the weather will be mainly fine with some local cloud in the afternoon. A small rise is expected in the temperature.

Sea temperature: West 24C. East 28C.

Cyprus House President leaves for New York

Larnaca, Sept 05 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias has said Cyprus expects from COREPER during its meeting on Wednesday in Brussels to give a ''sound counterstatement'' to Turkey's unilateral statement of not recognizing the Cyprus Republic, ''that will also express our own will and our own interests.''

Speaking at Larnaca airport prior to his departure to New York to attend the 2nd World Conference of Speakers of Parliament hosted by Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) under the United Nations, he expressed the belief that with the current situation it is possible to have such a counterstatement.

Nicosia, Sep 05 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Municipalities and the Local Councils Association of Malta signed here today a Memorandum of Cooperation.

Through the Memorandum, signed by the President of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities Demetris Kontides and the President of the Local Councils Association of Malta Ian Micallef, at the presence of Cyprus Interior Minister Andreas Christou, the two associations aim to enhance their cooperation through convenient and workable structures by carrying out multilateral exchanges and organizing joint actions in an effort to address issues of concern, to help resolve common problems and to address new opportunities.

Cyprus expects improvement of EU counter statement

Nicosia, Sept 5 (CNA) The Cyprus Government is expecting further improvement of the counter statement of the EU at the COREPER meeting as regards the Turkish unilateral statement of Turkey issued at the signing of the Protocol for extending its customs Union to include the ten new EU member states that it does not recognise Cyprus.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides speaking after the Cabinet's meeting expressed the view that ''we can achieve a big part of what we aim''.

What is important, he said, is that the EU almost unanimously agrees that there should be a counter statement, which will set things in their right dimension as regards the Turkish stance.

Cyprus to examine EU residents complaint of not allowed to vote in by-election

Nicosia, Sept 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus Interior Minister Andreas Christou has said he understands the disappointment of EU citizens living at Peyia municipality in the western coastal area of Paphos, who complained that they were not informed on time to register at the voting lists and thus participate at the by-elections that took place Sunday in the municipality.

On his part Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said that the complaint of Peyia EU permanent residents' will be looked into.
