    Cypriot Ambassador presents credentials to UNOV

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) -- The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus at the UN in Geneva, Kornilios Korniliou, has also presented his credentials to the Alternate General Director of the United Nations in Vienna and Executive Director of the United Nations for Narcotics and Crime (UNOV) Franz Baumann.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus: Friday and Saturday: 02/09/2005 to 03/09/2005 ------------------- Mainly fine weather is expected at first, but gradually local cloud will temporarily increase in amount inland and over mountains, in the afternoon. Isolated showers are possible, mainly inland and over mountain areas, on Saturday afternoon. Southwesterly to westerly moderate winds will generally prevail expected fresh to strong though, over the south in the afternoons. Gentle and locally moderate westerly winds will be blowing overnight. Maximum temperature 32-33C inland, 31-32C over the east and south coasts, 28-29C over the west and north coasts and 23-24C over Prodromos. Minimum temperature generally 20-21C inland and over the coasts and 15-16C over Prodromos.     UNFICYP's new police contingents raise flags

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) -- The number of contingents serving with UNFICYPs United Nations Police component has reached eight with the arrival of Italian and Bosnian last month.

    A joint flag-raising ceremony was held at UNFICYP's Nicosia UNPA Headquarters yesterday by members of the Italian and Bosnian police contigents to mark the occasion of their arrival.

    Cypriot President to attend UN General Assembly

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos leaves Sunday (September 4) for the United States, where he will represent Cyprus at the 60th General Assembly of the United Nations (14-19 September), Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides announced today.

    Earlier President Papadopoulos will fly to Florida to undergo annual medical examinations.

    Nicosia Sep 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus, a European Union member-state since May 1, 2004, could act as a bridge between the 25-member bloc and the countries of the Middle East, a representative of the European Commission Representation to Cyprus said here Thursday.

    Addressing a European Journalism Centre seminar entitled ''Cyprus, the new border to the South-eastern Mediterranean'', Klimentini Diakomanoli on behalf of the EC Reprentation said that the implementation the European Neighbourhoud Policy (ENP) allows Cyprus to play the important bridge function between the EU and the Middle East.

    Cypriot new head of EP office assumes office

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) -- Cypriot Tasos Georgiou assumed today office as Head of the European Parliament Information Office in Cyprus, the EP Office announced.

    Georgiou has been previously working with the Cyprus House of Representatives as Senior European Affairs Officer and was the liaison Officer between the Cypriot Parliament and the European Parliament.

    Parties recommend independent investigating committee for air crash

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) --- President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias said today that he was satisfied with the unanimous decision taken by all parliamentary party leaders to ask President Tassos Papadopoulos to set up an independent committee to investigate the causes of the air crash of a Cypriot airplane, that resulted in the death of 121 people.

    Party leaders held today a joint meeting at the House of Representatives in order to decide on the adoption of a text, that has been signed by Christofias and submitted to President Papadopoulos, asking for the expedition of procedures for the establishment of an independent investigating committee for the air crash.

    House President sends message of support to US House Speaker

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) -- Demetris Christofias, President of the Cyprus House of Representatives, sent today a message of support to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Dennis Hastert, expressing shock and grief for the terrible loss which hurricane Katrina has caused.

    Christofias expressed deep regret for those killed and the people who have suffered great losses.

    Speaker expects EU to help recognition of Cyprus by Turkey

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) --- The Republic of Cyprus is seeking to have Ankara recognise Nicosia and expects the European Union to respect itself, its principles and the implementation of a protocol extending Turkey's customs union to all new EU member states, including Cyprus, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias said here today.

    His comments came in response to a British draft on an EU counter-declaration to Turkey's unilateral declaration that it does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus. The Turkish declaration followed the signing of the protocol in late July.

    Today and tomorrow the EU Foreign Ministers convene in Newport, Wales, in order to debate on Turkey's EU course and are expected to adopt a counterdeclaration.

    Cypriot President determined to find truth about air crash

    Nicosia, Sep 1 (CNA) --- President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos sent today a reply letter to House President Demetris Christofias, regarding the latter's request, as decided by all political parties today, to establish an independent committee to investigate the causes of the Helios airplane crash, in mid August that killed all 121 people on board, most of them Cypriots.

    In his letter, President Papadopoulos says that he has been looking into the possibility of having foreign experts help investigations to determine if and where responsibility for the crash lies.
