    Helios Airways air crash - Memorial service

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- A memorial service will take place here today for the 121 victims of Sunday's air tragedy, when an Helios Airways Boeing crashed near Athens, killing everybody on board.

    Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and House President Demetris Christofias as well as government officials will attend the service at Faneromeni church, in Nicosia. Memorial services will take place in other towns as well.

    Meanwhile, relatives of some of the victims who had gone to Athens on Monday returned home in the early hours of today, having identified some of the bodies.

    Health Minister Andreas Gavrielides said that 24 bodies out of the 45 taken to the mortuary at Goudi, in Athens, have been identified and some bodies may be brought home for burial today on board a Greek air force C-130.

    Nicosia, Aug 15 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has pledged that a full investigation will be carried out into the cause of the Helios Airways plane crash, near Athens on Sunday, that killed all 121 persons on board.

    Speaking after a memorial service for the victims of the crash, President Papadopoulos expressed deep sorrow and pain for the loss of life.

    He stressed that the ''government will go beyond conveying condolences and will stand by the relatives, offering every help they might need''.

    He assured the Cyprus people that the government ''will make serious efforts for a full investigation to find the cause of the crash and those responsible for this tragedy''.

    Papadopoulos said the government was in contact with the European Union and would not hesitate to call in ''independent and objective experts until this is fully investigated, impartially, and until responsibility is attributed, no matter who those responsible may be.''

    British government conveys condolences for Helios air crash

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) In a letter to the President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos, British Acting Prime Minister John Prescott has conveyed the condolences of the British government to the people of Cyprus for the Helios Airways plane crash, near Athens on Sunday, that killed all 121 persons on board.

    ''I was deeply saddened to hear of the terrible loss of life in the Helios Airways plane crash near Athens,'' Prescott said, expressing ''particular shock'' at the death of so many children.

    ''My thoughts are with the relatives and friends of those who have lost their lives'' said Prescott, noting that ''on behalf of the British government, I extend our sincerest condolences to the people of Cyprus''.

    Letters of condolences from Ministers at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office were also sent yesterday to the Foreign Minister of Cyprus, George Iacovou.

    Police collect Helios documents and testimonies

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) Investigations into Sunday's air crash will go as deep as necessary, wherever there is evidence, Chief of Police Tasos Panayiotou said here today, referring to continuing police efforts to collect and assess all data with regard to an Helios Airways plane crash, near Athens, that killed all 121 people on board.

    Speaking after a memorial service for the victims, Panayiotou said that the police have already collected a number of documents which are being evaluated and have taken testimonies from persons who might have something to say about this tragedy and possible problems encountered during Helios flights.

    He refrained from commenting on the various allegations published in the press in the past couple of days, because, as he pointed out, the investigation was still continuing. He appealed to the public to come forward with any information they may have on the matter.

    Panayiotou said that police officers, who raided Monday night Helios offices, were examining documents seized.

    Autopsies continue in Helios Airways air crash

    Athens, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Autopsies carried out on 25 of those killed in Sunday's crash of an Helios airliner show that these people were alive, though not necessarily conscious, at the moment of the crash, a coroner said Tuesday.

    The 25 are among the 45 bodies who are recognizable, after an Helios Boeing 737 crashed into a mountainside north of Athens, killing all 121 people on board.

    Coroner Nicos Karakoukis told reporters that toxicological examination would determine whether those on board had inhaled toxic fumes.

    Karakoukis said that ''the immediate cause of death is contusions, these people (the 25 bodies so far examined) were alive on impact'' and explained that a person can survive for only three minutes without oxygen.

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn, in a message of sympathy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou, has conveyed his condolences for the tragic air accident of August 14th that killed all 121 people on board.

    ''I would like to express my deep sadness at the terrible loss of life of so many Cypriots in last Sunday's plane crash near Athens'', Rehn said.

    ''I offer my deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to you and your government as well as to the relatives and friends of those who so tragically lost their lives'', he added.

    A statement issued by the European Parliament Information Office in Nicosia stated it participates in the difficult moments and mourning of the people of Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) --President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso has sent a message of condolences to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos for Sundays plane disaster that resulted in the death of 121 people.

    It was with great sadness that I learned about Sundays airplane disaster which has deeply struck your people and country, causing many casualties and so much suffering'', Barroso said, an official statement said today.

    ''On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf'', he noted, ''allow me to offer you and the people of the Republic of Cyprus our sincere condolences, and the expression of our deepest sympathy and solidarity with the families of the victims.

    President Papadopoulos also received today letters and messages of condolences for the tragic air accident from French President Jacque Chirac, Russias President Vladimir Putin, Finish President Tarja Halonen, Serbia-Montenegros President Svetozar Marovic, President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus, Queen of The Netherlands Beatrice, President of the German Federation Çorst Kohler, his Holiness Aram I Catholicos of Cilicia.
