    State Department: US aid for Cyprus designed for reunification

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- A 10-million-dollar contract awarded to Bearing Point Incorporated through the USAID aimed to help develop Turkish Cypriots in occupied Cyprus is part of a 30.5-million-dollar US effort designed to create a climate that will lead to the island's reunification, State Department acting spokesman Tom Casey has said.

    The Central Bank of Cyprus announces that during the auction conducted on 14 July 2005 for the acceptance of deposits of 14-day duration, bids amounting to £151,5 million were submitted, and an amount of £70,0 million was absorbed at a weighted average allotment rate of 2,62%. The minimum and maximum allotment rates were 2,60% and 2,67%, respectively.

    Cyprus joins EU in memory of London victims

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus joined the other 24 European Union member-states in memory of the victims of last week's London bomb attacks.

    At 1400 local time (1100 GMT) Cyprus' public services stopped working and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the victims of the bomb attacks in the British capital.

    The two-minute silence in EU member-states had been proposed by the EU Troika.

    CMP briefed on progress made to exhumations

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) received today a situation report from the Inforce Forensic Archaeologist on the progress to date on the emergency exhumations.

    A CMP press release notes that during the meeting at the Ledra Palace hotel, the Committee also received a presentation from the Inforce Forensic Anthropologist on the establishment of an Anthropological Laboratory in the buffer zone, including and recommendations made regarding the premises to be used.

    The Committee approved the engagement of one of the two Turkish Cypriot Scientists for the DNA identification project. It is expected that the second Turkish Cypriot Scientist will be engaged soon.

    The next formal meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 21, at 1000 local time (0700 GMT).

    Justice Minister says Cyprus to cooperate in combating terrorism

    Brussels, Jul 14 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order condemned terrorism and expressed the full support and solidarity of the Republic of Cyprus with the victims of terrorist attacks and their relatives, and said Cyprus was ready to cooperate in order to find new ways to combat terrorism on the EU level, simultaneously respecting the internal constitutional order of each member state.

    Addressing the EU Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs extraordinary meeting, which took place in Brussels yesterday, Theodorou noted the need for international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and pointed out that prevention and facing the causes of terrorism was equally important as combating terrorism.

    European Commission to finance EMAC

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) - The European Commission will finance the regional cooperation of Europe and the Middle East in issues of European-Middle East Air Traffic Management Coordination (EMAC), comprising Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

    Permanent Secretary of the Cypriot Ministry of Communications and Works Makis Constantinides told CNA that the European Commission decided on Monday to submit a proposal to sponsor EMAC with one million euros.

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) - Rapporteur for Cyprus of the French Senate's delegation for the EU, Louis le Pensec, who arrived in Cyprus yesterday, will begin his meetings on July 19.

    During his stay, le Pensec will be received by President Tassos Papadopoulos and House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, and will meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and Acting President of the House Committee for Foreign Affairs Eleni Theocharous.

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) - Minister of Development, Industry and External Trade of the Federative Republic of Brazil Luiz Fernando Furlan arrives in Cyprus on July 20 for a two-day official visit.

    During his stay, Furlan will be received by President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, and will meet with Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lillikas.

    Cypriot President wishes British courage to endure ordeal

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed his sympathy for the victims of the terrorist attacks in London, their relatives and the people of Britain and wished ''courage and strength to endure this ordeal.''

    Speaking after the observance of two minutes of silence at the entrance of the Presidential Palace, in memory of the victims from the terrorist attacks, President Papadopoulos said ''we condemn with repugnance every king of terrorist act, which virtually afflicts all the peoples' peace and human rights, all over the world.''

    Cyprus' GDP increases in 2005 first quarter

    Brussels, Jul 14 (CNA) - Cyprus' GDP rose by 3.9% during the first quarter of 2005 compared to the respective period of 2004, according to figures released by the EU's statistical service ''Eurostat'' regarding GDP developments in the EU member states.

    The figures also indicate that the GDP in Cyprus rose by 0.8% during the first quarter of 2005, compared to the fourth quarter of 2004.
