    British Presidency of EU organises environment debate in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- The British High Commission and the British Council in Nicosia are organising a series of events in Cyprus on environmental issues, as part of action within the EU on climate change and the promotion of sustainable development, which form a key priority for the six-month UK presidency.

    Beginning this week, eminent UK speakers will give lectures and participate in ''cafe scientifique debates'' on a range of issues at venues throughout Cyprus, according to a news release by the organisers.

    Cyprus - Harvard Institute for Public Health to start work in September

    Nicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- The Cyprus International Institute (CII) for the Environment and Public Health, which is established here by the Harvard School of Public Health and the government of Cyprus, will launch next September its research and academic work, aiming to address key environmental issues in Cyprus and the Mediterranean region.

    Director of the CII, Professor Filippos Democritou presented today the Institute's research priorities, which are environmental pollution, passive smoking and its impact on public health, as well as on diabetes and obesity, and its interaction with genetic material and environmental exposure.

    Cyprus Government: Turkey must sign Protocol before EU negotiations

    Nicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- The EU must have noted that Turkey has given promises plenty of times in the past that it will sign the Adjustment Protocol, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said.

    ''This position is repeated, but we have not yet seen the signing of the Protocol, something which consists an obligation of Turkey towards the EU before the beginning of the negotiations,'' he said.

    Hungarian FM to pay official visit to Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary Ferenc Somogyi will pay an official visit to Cyprus July 7-8, during which he will hold talks with his Cypriot counterpart George Iacovou.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that during his visit Somogyi will be received by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    AKEL and RTK agree to have intensive talks

    Nicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot left wing party AKEL and Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party (RTK) have said that intensive talks between the parties must go on with a view to reach common resultants on the Cyprus question and bridge the gap of views as regards the Annan plan.

    Delegations of the two parties under AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias and RTK President Ferdi Sabit Soyer met today at AKEL offices for almost three hours.

    Straw: Turkey's accession talks best hope for Cyprus' reunification

    London, Jul 5 (CNA) -- The best hope of resolving the problems on Cyprus in the long term and achieving its unification is through Turkey's accession negotiations because Turkey knows that that issue must be resolved before it can become a member of the EU, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has said.

    Cyprus and Syria to sign agreement on investments

    Nicosia, Jul 5(CNA) --- Cyprus and Syria decided to further develop their cooperation in the areas of trade and solar energy and next October they will sign in Damascus an agreement regarding the protection and development of investments between both countries.

    Visiting Syrian Minister for Economy and Trade Amer Hosni Lutfi and Cypriot Minister of Economy Makis Keravnos met here today and agreed to launch a series of meetings between Syrian and Cypriot businessmen in the presence of governmental officers, in order to explore ways of cooperation.
