    Cyprus President: A new initiative on Cyprus must be well prepared

    Nicosia, Jul 3 (CNA)-- A new initiative on Cyprus should be well prepared so that it would not fail, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has said.

    Replying to questions Papadopoulos said that ''United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's initiative (on Cyprus) is in progress'', adding that ''every rational person understands that every new initiative must be well prepared so that it will not fail.''

    Cyprus European Party holds its founding congress

    Nicosia, Jul 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus newly founded European Party held here today its founding congress.

    MP Demetris Syllouris, Nicos Koutsou and MP Christos Taramountas were declared as President, Deputy President and Vice President of the party. They have all been elected unopposed.

    The congress was attended by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and other officials and was addressed by political party leaders and representatives.

    In his speech Syllouris pledged that the party will work to promote the soonest possible a functional settlement of the Cyprus problem that will respect Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots fundamental rights and freedoms and will be fully compatible with the acquis communautaire and the EU principles and values.
