Cyprus says Bulgarian Turks in occupied areas are settlers

Nicosia, Jun 24 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that Turks with a Bulgarian citizenship living in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic were not allowed to cross over into the government-controlled areas to vote at the Bulgarian Embassy for the country's elections because they fall into the category of settlers, noting that the Bulgarian authorities have already been notified.

Chrysostomides said that former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash ''had illegally allowed the transportation of Turks from Bulgaria to the occupied areas of Cyprus'' a few years ago, adding that ''this number of Turks from Bulgaria falls into the category of settlers.''

''Illegal colonisation is a war crime against humanitarian law, it is condemned by international law, it is deplored by the new charter of the International Criminal Court and thus none of the settlers automatically gain the right to either reside or legalise their stay in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus,'' Chrysostomides pointed out.

Nicosia, Jun 24 (CNA) -- When Slovakia becomes member of the UN Security Council as of January 2006 it should try again to contribute to the settlement of the Cyprus problem, Slovak Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan, who paid a two-day official visit to Cyprus, June 23-24, said today.

US Ambassador: Cypriot leaders should cultivate new mindset

Nicosia, Jun 24 (CNA) - The status quo in Cyprus is as unacceptable to Americans as it is to Cypriots on both sides, and we understand it is not sustainable, US Ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson said, noting that the US does not support the island's continued division and its permanent partition.

Speaking today during a farewell lunch hosted for him by the Cyprus American Business Association, Klosson said ''despite the numerous positive developments everyone is conscious that time does not work in favour of a settlement,'' underlining that ''the passage of time creates new complications.''
