    Russia supports just solution of Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) - Russia steadfastly supports ''a just, viable and comprehensive settlement'' of the Cyprus problem, based on ''UN Security Council resolutions and the voluntary agreement of the Greek and Turkish communities on the island.''

    Moscow's stance is expressed in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation after the Security Council adopted Resolution 1604 on renewing the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for a further six months.

    ''Russia will continue to make efforts in the UN and on a bilateral level to achieve this goal,'' the statement adds.

    DISY and RTP to intensify Cyprus solution efforts

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) -- The leaders of the Democratic Rally Party (DISY), in the free areas, and the Republican Turkish Party, in the occupied areas, Nicos Anastasiades and Ferdi Sabit Soyer, have agreed to continue their meetings and intensify efforts towards the resumption of the Cyprus dialogue leading to the island's reunification.

    They also urged the leaders of the island's two communities to send the soonest messages of hope to the Cypriot people.

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) - The Cypriot government views as positive a statement issued by the Russian Federation's Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the adoption of a resolution by the UN Security Council to renew the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today.

    ''It reiterates the willingness of the Russian Federation to help in any possible way to promote efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem and considers the resolution to be positive,'' Chrysostomides added.

    Primate of Cyprus church undergoes surgery successfully

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) -- Archbishop Chrysostomos, the primate of the Church of Cyprus, is recovering from surgery at the intensive care unit of the Nicosia General Hospital, a medical press release said here this afternoon, adding that ''the Archbishop is in a stable condition.''

    It said that he had suffered a subcapital fracture on his left hip and doctors decided they had to operate. The surgery was successful, the press release added.

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA)-- Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou discussed today in Bucharest with Romanian officials the European Union's prospects after the latest developments in the Union, concerning the European Constitution ratification process and the EU's 2007-2013 fiscal prospects.

    Romania sought and secured Cyprus' support in its bid to conclude successfully its accession process.

    Cyprus says Brussels talks fail due to Turkish stance

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the stance of the Turkish Cypriot side and its insistence on its positions led recent talks on the EU regulations for the Turkish Cypriots to a failure, adding that the Turkish Cypriot side wanted its demands to be met before it even discussed opening the fenced-off area of Famagusta.

    Chrysostomides dismissed Turkish Cypriot press reports that the Greek Cypriot side was negative during recent talks in Brussels. ''I wish to categorically dismiss this. I wish to say that the Luxembourg presidency acted tirelessly and objectively and made every effort to reach a solution, which the Cypriot government notes with gratitude,'' he said.

    Cyprus athletes to compete in Almeria Med Games

    Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) -- Around 35 Cypriot athletes will participate at the Mediterranean Games that will take place in Almeria, Spain, 24 June - 3 July.

    The Cypriot athletes will compete in weightlifting, swimming, shooting, karate, gymnastics, canoe, athletics, wrestling, rowing, boxing, judo and sailing.
