State Department: US deputies decided on their own how to travel to Cyprus

Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- US State Department spokesman Sean MacCormack has said the delegation of the US Congress members who visited Cyprus' areas occupied by Turkish troops via the illegal airport at Tymbou made its own decisions on how to travel to the island.

Replying to questions, MacCormack said ''the US supports Secretary General Annan's call to ease the isolation of Turkish Cypriots as one way to move toward a comprehensive settlement. US personnel are authorized to fly into Ercan Airport. People of many nationalities fly in and out of that airport every day.''

Cyprus can seek concessions from Turkey, says British diplomat

Nicosia, Jun 8 (CNA) -- A Cyprus solution can be achieved if the island's two communities really want it, see it and work hard to get it, British High Commissioner here Lyn Parker has said, adding that in such a case other parties involved will have to have this happen.

Declaring himself a realist, Parker called on the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides as well as Turkey to show a clear sense of commitment, purpose and urgency towards a settlement and advocated ''more dialogue'' on the island as a crucial building block for achieving a successful settlement negotiation.

Responding to questions at a meeting of Rotary clubs in Nicosia, he said the EU had taken a clear decision to begin accession talks with Turkey on 3 October this year, which he said would last a minimum of ten years.

Claire Palley: Turkey must solve the Cyprus question

    by Maria Myles

Nicosia, Jun 7 (CNA) -- The comings and goings, the public as well as the behind the scenes consultations and machinations of the various players in the most recent UN attempt to settle the question of Cyprus are the theme of a book, entitled ''An International Relations Debacle'', as seen through the eyes of the author, Dr Claire Palley, who has been involved in a series of negotiations over the past few decades.

In an interview with CNA, she explains why she felt she had to write this account of what happened and looks ahead to future developments in the continuing effort to find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus.

''The outside world was completely mesmerized by the view put out by the UN about what had happened, the true picture must be given, it must be available to opinion shapers because as long as they believed that the Greek Cypriot side did not want a solution, there would be no impetus for negotiations,'' she said.
