AHI President sends letter to US Congressman about illegal visit

Nicosia, May 27 (CNA) -- Forthcoming visit of US congressmen to the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus through an illegal port of entry constitutes a violation of US and international law and does not contribute to the efforts to reach a settlement and reunify the island.

This was said by American Hellenic Institute (AHI) President Gene Rossides in a letter to US Congressman Ed Whitfield, who is to head a US delegation aiming to pay an illegal visit to occupied Cyprus through the "Ercan" illegal airport.

New York, May 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, handed a cheque worth 110 thousand dollars to the Ambassador of the Maldives Mohamed Latheef collected by the Cooperative Movement in Cyprus in aid following the catastrophic tsunami of last December in south-east Asia.

Delivering the cheque, which was accompanied by a letter by Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Mavroyiannis expressed Cyprus solidarity with efforts being made to reconstruct the country as well as its willingness to support the country, as an EU member state.

Nicosia, May 27 (CNA) -- President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) Gene Rossides has sent a letter to US President George Bush on the occasion of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the White House on June 8th, in which he refers to the Cyprus issue, the US - Turkey relations, asking the US to reconsider Turkeys importance to US interests.

Interpol's ERC to improve cooperation to combat crime

Nicosia, May 27 (CNA) -- Interpols 34th annual European Regional Conference ended here today with delegates from 45 countries endorsing a number of important initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and co-operation among the regions police as they combat international crime.

Delegates agreed to improve co-operation between Interpol and European Union institutions and to develop an action plan to share data and provide better co-ordination.

Cyprus says no Gambian intention to recognise puppet regime

Nicosia, May 27 (CNA) - The Gambia reaffirms its respect to obligations deriving from international law, Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today, commenting on reports that the western African country intends to recognise the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

Responding to questions during his daily briefing, the Spokesman said that no official statement was issued from the government of The Gambia, noting that all necessary contacts took place by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus as well as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Full freedom of expression on Annan Plan, Spokesman says

Nicosia, May 27 (CNA) - There has been full freedom of discussion in all aspects of the plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for the solution of the Cyprus problem, Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said.

He also described as unfounded the accusations against the Cypriot Government, as described in a report of Amnesty International as regards the period prior to the referendum in April 2004, which led to the rejection of a UN sponsored plan for a Cyprus settlement.

UN Under-Secretary General in Cyprus next week

Nicosia, May 27 (CNA) - UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast will visit Cyprus next week to hold meetings with the political leadership on both sides of the island.

Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today that Sir Kieran would be having separate meetings with President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, as well as other political leaders on the two sides.
