    Cyprus strongly protests new Turkish air violations

    United Nations, May 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis has strongly protested to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan new violations of Cyprus' national airspace and Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) by Turkish military aircraft reported from March 30 to May 6, 2005.

    In a letter addressed to Annan, dated 17 May 2005, Mavroyiannis stressed that such acts blatantly contravene international law and air traffic regulations and seriously endanger international civil aviation, increase insecurity, maintain a climate of tension in a particularly sensitive region and undermine the efforts made to achieve progress in resolving the Cyprus issue.

    US hopes parties will demonstrate political will for Cyprus solution

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson has expressed hope that the parties involved in the Cyprus issue will demonstrate realistic positions helping the UN to resume talks for a Cyprus settlement.

    Responding to questions by CNA at a reception last night at the Turkish Cypriot Industrial Chamber pavilion at the Cyprus International Fair, Klosson said the US follow with great interest developments in the Cyprus problem.

    Cyprus made eligible for additional EU funding

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- The European Parliament's committee on regional development has adopted proposals making Cyprus eligible for additional resources from EU structural funds.

    Amendments to existing financial arrangements for Cyprus and Malta were tabled yesterday by Cypriot MEP's Kyriakos Triantafyllides and Yiannakis Matsis, and Maltese MEP Simon Busuttil.

    The amendments have to be approved by the European Parliament during its plenary in Strasbourg early June.

    European Symposium in International Macroeconomics opens in Cyprus

    Limassol, May 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus, along with many other countries, has benefited from developments paved by economic research in the institutional set up and procedures of policy-making bodies as well as from the subsequent research concerning the sequencing of reforms necessary for a smooth transition into a fully liberalised economic and financial system.

    This was stated by Cyprus Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou addressing the opening of a CEPR's European Summer Symposium in International Microeconomics held in Limassol until May 28.

    Cypriot minister discusses commerce and tourism issues in Israel

    Larnaca, May 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lillikas has discussed issues of cooperation with Israel in the fields of commerce and tourism with the competent ministers and institutions of Israel, during a two-day visit he paid to this neighbouring country.

    Speaking at Larnaca airport upon his return from Israel, Lillikas said that he met with the Israeli Ministers of Industry, Trade and Labour, Tourism, National Infrastructure and Transport and that during his visit to the Palestinian Authority he met with the Minister of Economy and Trade.

    Énterpol European Regional Conference starts in Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) Senior police officers, law enforcement officials and security experts from European police forces began discussing here today ways to improve cooperation on handling major public order operations and on combating terrorism and international crime.

    Chief of Cyprus Police force Tasos Panayiotou told the conference that Ankara's unwillingness to cooperate with Cyprus through Interpol creates problems to the work of the international organization as a whole.

    New party announced

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- Two parliamentary parties and an independent MP announced here today they are joining forces to form a new party, which will hold its inaugural congress in early July to elect its leadership.

    The announcement was made at a joint press conference of the European Democracy party of Prodromos Prodromou, the New Horizons party of Nicos Koutsou and independent parliamentarian Demetris Sillouris.

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- The Irish Defence Forces have ended 41 years of peacekeeping service in Cyprus at a special ceremony, UNFICYP announced today.

    The Irish presence in UNFICYP still continues with 18 members of the Irish Police currently serving as members of the peacekeeping mission's civilian police component.

    Entry into Cyprus through occupied ports illegal, says spokesman

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- Entering Cyprus through the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic is illegal, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, adding that any such move is contrary to Security Council resolution 550 which calls on all states not to recognize any other state on the island other than the Republic of Cyprus.

    His comments come in the wake of reports that US Congressmen intend to arrive in Cyprus through the northern Turkish occupied areas, which the government has declared illegal ports of entry into the country.
