Cyprus' Spokesman says US making double-standard remarks

Nicosia, May 4 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides described as ''double standards'' statements made by US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher that there has been no transfer of US weapons to Cyprus' Turkish-occupied areas that will cause concern and violation of statutes.

''Our position has been stated many times. It is a double standard policy. It is, I believe, a wrong policy because American weapons have been used during the illegal invasion of Cyprus and are still in the hands of the illegal occupation army,'' Chrysostomides added.

House President meets Finnish Eduskunta delegation

Nicosia, May 4 (CNA) - Greek Cypriots consider disappointing the result of the referendum held on 24 April 2004 on a Cyprus settlement plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias said here Wednesday, noting they do not want just any solution.

Speaking after meeting a delegation of the Finnish-Cypriot Friendship Group at the Eduskunta (Finnish Parliament) on the island for a visit, Christofias said he analysed the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the current developments and a possible initiative on the part of the UN Secretary-General, something which ''we desire, without arbitration and tight deadlines, for an agreed solution because the Annan Plan is not an agreed solution to the Cyprus problem.''

He said the Greek Cypriots are trying to get across the changes that are necessary to the Annan Plan which will respond to the demands and desires of the Greek Cypriots and that will serve the interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and not the interests of foreigners.

Marjukka Karttunen, head of the Finnish delegation, said ''there has been a lot of positive progress and even if the situation is complicated I believe that a solution can be made and I think that it should happen quite soon otherwise there will be more problems and it would be more difficult.''

Property issue very delicate, says Cypriot House President

Nicosia, May 4 (CNA) - Cypriot House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias has said the property issue is one of the most delicate and hardest aspects of the Cyprus problem, noting that the solutions proposed do not satisfy the people of Cyprus.

Invited to comment on news reports that the Turkish occupation regime has instructed those who live in or illegally occupy Greek Cypriot properties in the areas occupied by Turkey since 1974 to report to the so-called authorities if they are summoned to appear before courts of the Republic of Cyprus for illegal occupation, Christofias said he hoped ''everyone handles any such issue calmly.''
