Cyprus solution cannot deviate from EU Constitution, says Cypriot FM

Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA)--The solution of the Cyprus problem cannot deviate from the fundamental values of the European Union or the basic principles set out by Europe's Constitutional Treaty, Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said.

Speaking on ''The European Constitution and its significance for Cyprus and for the Cypriot citizens'', Iacovou said the need to achieve a solution consistent with the EU Constitution is in fact what Cypriot politicians call a ''European solution to the Cyprus problem.''

''The European Constitution sets certain principles which no negotiator, no third party can ignore,'' he stressed, noting that everyone understands the EU Constitution's importance with regard to a Cyprus solution.

Cyprus President says paper on EU common policy on Turkey is good

Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said the paper on the common position of the 25 EU members agreed yesterday during the meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), in view of the EU-Turkey Association Council to be held on April 26, is a good one and satisfies many of Cyprus' requests.

President Papadopoulos noted that this text will have to be discussed with Turkey on April 26, noting at the same time that this is a steadfast EU position, ''the so-called common position.''

He said this result, for which many people worked for many weeks, confirms that coordinated and systematic work, without announcements and publicity, brings results, and that Cyprus' presence at the EU ''helps us to project our positions and gain support.''

Austria says Cyprus' reunification must be based on viable agreement

Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Austria believes the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal state should be based on a viable agreement between the two communities, reached and guaranteed under the United Nations umbrella, and on a solid basis in international law, the first resident Ambassador of Austria to Cyprus Eva Hager said today, presenting her credentials to Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Speaking at the formal ceremony for the presentation of the credentials, President Papadopoulos assured that ''we seek an agreed solution that should be the product of negotiations, without strict deadlines and arbitration and which would promote the true reunification of Cyprus, its territory, societies, economy and institutions.''
