    IPU Monitoring Committee discusses Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) -- The Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) Monitoring Committee on Cyprus has discussed developments in the question of Cyprus, in the framework of the 112th IPU meeting, currently underway in the Philippines.

    A five-member Cypriot delegation, participating in the meeting, briefed delegates about recent developments, including the outcome of a referendum on a UN-proposed solution plan, stressing that the rejection of the plan by the Greek Cypriots was not a rejection of a political settlement.

    Cyprus to participate in Mediterranean Games

    Nicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus will participate in the 15th Mediterranean Games with 45 athletes, who will compete in 11 out of 24 events, Kikis Lazarides, President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, expressing hope that some of them could very well bring back home some medals.

    Speaking at a press conference, Lazarides, who is also member of the International Olympic Committee, said Cyprus will aim to be among the eight top countries in the final ranking of the Games, to take place in Spain in late June beginning of July.

    Cyprus and US start 2nd round of talks for WMD agreement

    Nicosia, 6 Apr (CNA) -- A 2nd round of bilateral talks between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States of America started today at the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs aimed at drafting an interstate agreement of cooperation between the two countries to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, their launching systems and materials by sea.

    Cyprus Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Sotos Zackheos and US Charge d' Affaires Ned Nolan noted at the opening that the talks are held in the broader context of cooperation between Cyprus and the US, and the general effort of the international community to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

    EU Justice Ministers to discuss social aspects of law, terrorism

    Nicosia, 6 Apr (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order Doros Theodorou left today for Helsinki where he will participate in a conference with his counterparts of the Council of Europe to discuss the social aspects of law and review work accomplished in fighting terrorism.

    Speaking upon departure at Larnaca airport, Theodorou announced that later on he will travel to Latvia in order to sign a bilateral agreement with the government of the country to fight terrorism and organised crime.

    He will then fly on to Luxembourg for the EU Ministers of Justice and Internal Affairs Meeting.

    Cyprus government welcomes European Court decision

    Nicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) -- The government welcomed here today a decision by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) that a compensation ''commission'', set up in Turkish occupied Cyprus, is not an effective medium which can deal with Greek Cypriot property claims, as Ankara had maintained before the Court.

    ''The ruling was expected, as the Court operates on the basis of the European Convention on Human Rights. It was clear that the Court would reach this conclusion,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today.

    Cyprus pledges to safeguard Turkish Cypriots' right to education

    Nicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Government will make every effort to safeguard the right to education and knowledge of the Turkish language for Turkish Cypriots living in Limassol, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has assured.

    Replying to questions regarding the opening of a school for Turkish Cypriot students who live in Limassol, Chrysostomides said today that government continues its contacts with the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) on this issue.

    First bicommunal conference on Cypriot working women in Nicosia

    Nicosia, Apr 6 (CNA) --- Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot working women met today in Nicosia for their first bicommunal conference to discuss their situation in the work market and the problems they face.

    The conference entitled ''The situation of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot working women - Prospects in a reunited homeland'', was co-organized by the Women's Departments of Greek Cypriot PEO and Turkish Cypriot DEV - IS trade unions.

    In a joint declaration the women organizations underline that the solution of the Cyprus problem will contribute in their struggle for equality and prosperity, whereas a non - solution would have only negative consequences on the women of the island.

    Larnaca, Apr 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Doros Theodorou said that a number of EU member states have responded positively to the Cyprus Republic's positions on how to address the problem of illegal migrants.

    He also said they view positively an end to granting Turkey ''visas'' for entry to the area occupied by Turkish troops and joint patrols by vessels of EU members to control the sea north of Cyprus.

    Straw: Britain places high priority on efforts for a Cyprus solution

    London, Apr 6 (CNA) -- Britain continues to place a high priority on supporting all efforts towards a solution to the Cyprus problem, British Secretary of State Jack Straw said in a response to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Report on Cyprus.

    In a Command Paper setting out the British Government's response to the recent Foreign Affairs Committee's report on Cyprus, Straw said Britain recognises that any further negotiations on a settlement based on the Annan Plan will necessarily involve some changes to the plan, stressing that ''any changes proposed by the parties should be to the mutual benefit of the two communities.''
