    Brussels, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Greeces Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has called on Turkey to keep the promises it undertook and to sign the protocol expanding its customs union with the ten new EU member- states, including Cyprus.

    Presidents of Cyprus and Poland meet in Nicosia for talks

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, who arrived in Cyprus yesterday for a two-day official visit, went to the Presidential Palace this morning, along with his entourage, where he is holding talks with his Cypriot counterpart Tassos Papadopoulos.

    At the Presidential Palace, Kwasniewski and his spouse were welcomed by President Papadopoulos and his wife, Fotini.

    Polish President: EU must play more activerole in Cyprus solution

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Poland's President Aleksander Kwasniewski stated here today that the European Union should play a more active role in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

    He told a joint press conference with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos after official talks at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia that three countries involved namely Britain, Greece and Cyprus, are already EU members while Turkey aspires to join the EU.

    He pledged that his country would do its utmost for Cyprus' reunification.

    Papadopoulos expressed the Greek Cypriot's side readiness to start negotiations with an aim to resolve the protracted Cyprus problem.

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 18/03/2005 to 19/03/2005 ---------------------------------------- Mainly clear sky with some local cloud. Winds in the morning will be variable gentle breezes and in the afternoon mainly southwesterly to northwesterly gentle to moderate breezes.

    At night mainly northwesterly to northeasterly light to gentle breezes will prevail and over the north coast at times southeasterly to southwesterly ligh to gentle breezes.

    The sea state will range from smooth to slight. Maximum temperatures will be aroung 22C inland and over the coast and around 11C over the Prodromos area in the mountains.

    Minimum temperatures will range from aroung 10-11C over the coast, to 8-9C inland and to 4C over the Prodromos area.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 20/03/2005 to 21/03/2005 ------------------------------- Partly cloudy with some local showers on Monday.

    FIBA All Star Day to be organised in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- One of the biggest basketball events in the world, the All Star Day 2005, organised by FIBA Europe, will take place this year in Cyprus on April 14, and promises a rich programme, a three pointers' competition, and an interesting basketball game between European and non European players.

    Executive Director of FIBA Nar Zanolin told a press copnference today in Nicosia that Cyprus would manage to organise the event successfully and added that this would promote ''not only the League and the FIBA Europe, but above all Cyprus in general''.

    Cypriot President proposes new UN initiative on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said today that the Greek Cypriot side had proposed to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to launch a new initiative to solve the Cyprus problem.

    He explained that the proposal had been conveyed through the Cyprus Republic's Permanent Representative to the UN.

    President Papadopoulos was asked to clarify statements by Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, after talks they had this morning, that the Greek Cypriot side had proposed the launching of an initiative by the UN in the direction of a Cyprus settlement.

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Poland believe that there is a need to resume, as soon as possible, negotiations with a view at finding a political settlement in Cyprus.

    ''We want a resumption of talks, under UN auspices, in order to find a solution as soon as possible with more active participation of the European Union,'' Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said, adding that the UN-proposed solution plan (Annan plan) remains the framework for negotiations for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

    Athens, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has said that Athens is committed to making every effort for a political settlement in Cyprus, adding that Turkey is expected to meet all its obligations with regard to its European Union accession course.
