AHI protests over US business trip to occupied areas

Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) Gene Rossides has sent a letter of protest to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, regarding today's arrival of a US business delegation in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, accompanied by a US Embassy commercial attache in Ankara.

Cyprus President condemns US visit to occupied north

Larnaca, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has condemned a visit of a US business delegation to the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, beginning today, accompanied by US Embassy commercial attache in Ankara.

Speaking at Larnaca airport upon his departure for an official visit to Malta, President Papadopoulos stressed that this visit does not contribute to the improvement of Cyprus-US relations, noting that the Cyprus Republic has made all necessary representations.

Referring to trade with the occupied areas, President Papadopoulos said the Cyprus Republic encourages contacts between the two communities as long as they take place within a legal framework.

He called upon the Turkish Cypriots to take advantage of the opportunities offered to them through the Green Line Regulation adopted by the Euroepan Union, adding that so-called premier of the pseudostate Mehmet Ali Talat prevents trade from the government- controlled areas to the occupied areas.

Responding to questions he said he was certain Turkey would eventually sign the Protocoll extending Customs Union to all EU member-states, including Cyprus. He expected that such a development would take place soon and before October, when accession talks between Turkey and the EU are set to start.

During his visit to Malta, (February 17-19), President Papadopoulos will have talks with Maltese President Edward Fenech Adami and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

He will also meet with the leader of the opposition Alfred Sant and with Maltese businessmen and industrialists.

US business delegation arrives in Turkish occupied areas

Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- A US business delegation arrived today in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, through an illegal point of entry, for contacts with Turkish Cypriot businesspeople.

After the arrival of the delegation, president of the Turkish Cypriot chamber of commerce Ali Erel said the trip gave a ''very clear message'' that there were no obstacles for business activities in the occupied areas, noting that ''a new process has started that may lead to a Cyprus settlement.''

The delegation arrived at the illegal airport ''Ercan'' at Tympou, accompanied by US Embassy commercial attache in Ankara Aner Kayani.

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has condemned the visit of the US business delegation to the Turkish-occupied areas, stressing this move could not contribute to the improvement of Cyprus-US relations.

The delegation, which arrived for contacts with Turkish Cypriot businesspeople, mainly comprises Turkish businesspeople representing American companies in Turkey.

Larnaca, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos began a three-day official visit to Malta today with an aim to further strengthen bilateral relations.

President Papadopoulos will have talks with Maltese President Edward Fenech Adami and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and meet opposition leader Alfred Sant and Maltese businesspeople.

Greece says economic growth in Cyprus should be enhanced

Athens, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman George Koumoutsakos said today that, after a referendum in Cyprus on a UN plan for a settlement of the political problem, Greece's position was that economic growth and cooperation should be enhanced in Cyprus.

Commenting on today's illegal visit to the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus by a group of businesspeople representing US companies in Turkey, Koumoutsakos said that it was because of this position that the Cypriot government suggested that 259 million euros be given to the Turkish Cypriots, despite the fact that these funds were supposed to be released by the EU in case of a solution.
