    EU Commission to set up health experts committee in Cyprus

    Brussels, Jan 27 (CNA) -- The European Commission has authorised EU Enlargement Commissioner Oli Rhen to set up a ten-member experts committee to carry out health checks on plant and animal products crossing Cyprus' dividing line, which are destined to be exported to member-states.

    The Enlargement Directorate, in close cooperation with the Health and Protection of the Consumer Directorate, will work together to set up the committee.

    Brussels, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Two Cypriot Euro MPs, party to a European Parliament observers mission for the Palestinian elections, have expressed hope that recent developments in the region would allow peace talks to resume with a view at achieving the goal set out in the Road Map on the situation in the Middle East.

    Cyprus condemns Nazi atrocities

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus joined its voice today with the rest of the world and condemned the atrocities committed during World War II by the Nazis, as leaders from many nations gather in Auschwitz to mark 60 years since the liberation of this infamous concentration camp, where thousands of people were killed.

    ''The world community condemns these atrocities and Cyprus condones this condemnation. This is a reminder of the need to respect democracy, human rights and to see to it that such horrific phenomena are not repeated,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said.

    Cyprus and Syria sign cooperation memorandum on transportation

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Syria signed today a cooperation memorandum on land, air and sea transportation.

    The memorandum was signed by Cyprus Communications and Works Minister Harris Thrassou and Syria's Transport Minister Macram Obeid on the sidelines of the 4th Meeting of the Europe-Middle East Air Traffic Management Coordination (EMAC) Steering Committee.

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - Cypriot Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronicolas said today that there was still no response from the Turkish occupation army in relation with ''unilateral efforts on our side for the de-mining of the ceasefire line.''

    Government Spokesman: attempts for political gains not helpful

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Insistence by the Turkish Cypriot side to secure political gains does not help create a climate of cooperation for a political settlement, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has stressed.

    He also said that the European Union must be aware of this approach and added that the Cyprus government has done all it can to facilitate cooperation and understanding between the island's two communities.

    EU programmes to be implemented in Cyprus in 2005

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) Productivity performance, competitiveness and growth in Cyprus are all expected to increase through Community Programmes to be implemented in 2005, partly funded by the Structural Funds of the EU.

    A total expenditure of up to 110 million euros is expected to fund programmes relating to the development of rural areas and some depressed areas of the capital Nicosia and to enhance human resources and the fisheries sector.

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 28/01/2005 to 29/01/2005 -------------------

    Mainly cloudy with probability of light rain showers on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. Gentle to moderate, on Saturday mainly moderate, northeasterly to southeasterly breezes will prevail. Sea state mainly moderate and on Saturday locally rough. Maximum temperature will be around 17C inland, 19C over coastal areas and 13C over the Prodromos area on the mountains. Minimum temperature will be around 7C inland, 10C over coastal areas and 6C over the Prodromos area.
