[01] Cypriot President participates in European Council1015:CYPPRESS:01Cypriot President participates in European Council by Maria Koniotou Brussels, Nov 4 (CNA) -- The European Council starts a two-day session in Brussels today to mainly deal with the Lisbon strategy and the long-term programme on the EUs policy, which aims at achieving peace, security and justice in the Union. The Cyprus Republic is represented by President Tassos Papadopoulos, who is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou. Yesterday, Iacovou met in Brussels with High Representative for the EUs Common Foreign and Defence Policy Javier Solana, to whom he presented Cyprus positions on issues the European Commission raised in its recent report on Turkey, regarding Ankaras compliance with the Copenhagen criteria. Iacovou explained Cyprus positions on the necessity for Turkey to recognise the Republic of Cyprus, to sign its customs union with Cyprus, to open Turkish ports and airports for Cypriot ships and planes, to lift its vetos on Cyprus participation in various international organisations and remove all obstacles for Cyprus regarding its participation in the Common Foreign and Defence Policy. He also brought up the issues of Greek Cypriot properties and Turkish settlers in the Turkish occupied areas of the island, as well as the necessity to withdraw Turkish occupation troops from the island. During the talks, Madl said it was unthinkable for Turkey to commence accession negotiations with the EU, before recognising the Republic of Cyprus, already an EU member. Nicosia Mayor Michalis Zampelas and Cyprus Ambassador in Berlin Leonidas Markides will open the exhibition at the House of Democracy and Human Rights on November 9. [06] Cyprus President congratulates George Bush1720:CYPPRESS:07Cyprus President congratulates George Bush Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has congratulated warmly US President George Bush on his election victory, which secured him a second term in office, and wished him every success in the performance of his high duties. In a letter to President Bush, Papadopoulos says he looks forward to continuing US interest in Cyprus and to Washington's contribution to a viable and functional bizonal, bicommunal federation, based on UN resolutions and international law. Papadopoulos refers to the leading role the US plays in the world arena, particularly in the field of combating international terrorism and securing world peace and stability, and noted that a second term in office provides the US President with another historic opportunity to respond successfully to this challenge. President Papadopoulos expresses the conviction that the US would seek the broader possible international cooperation to strengthen the role of international and regional organizations, in particular the United Nations, for a more collective and effective handling of world affairs. ''I believe that this is an expectation shared by all heads of state and government who are in Brussels today for the European Council summit,'' President Papadopoulos adds. ''I also wish to see that during your second term in office your administration's interest in Cyprus will continue and that the US will contribute, in an objective manner, to a functional and viable solution in Cyprus, a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the basis of UN resolution and international law,'' he says. Szili was speaking after a meeting here with President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Demetris Christofias and a parliamentary delegation, who are currently in Hungary on an official visit.
