    UNFICYP necessary in the absence of settlement, UNSG Spokesman says

    United Nations, Oct 5 (CNA) In the absence of a Cyprus settlement, the presence of the UN peacekeepers on the island remains necessary for the maintenance of a cease-fire but certain adjustments to the mission can be made, UN Secretary-Generals Spokesman Fred Eckhard has said.

    Cyprus FM comments PACE decision for T/Cs and UNSG's report on UNFICYP

    Larnaca, Oct 5 (CNA) The Turkish Cypriots who will participate at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly will be suggested by the Turkish Cypriot political parties and not by any ''institution'' of the pseudostate, will be on the list of representatives of the Cypriot House of Representatives and will have the right to speak but not the right to vote, Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacocou has said.

    Speaking upon his departure for Amsterdam where he will participate at an informal meeting of the EU Ministers for European Affairs, Iacovou added that this development does not, at least at this point, promote the participation of Turkish Cypriots in other international organizations.

    Limassol, Oct 5 (CNA) - A report on Turkey's European aspirations, due out on Wednesday, will be objective and will be based on facts, Adriaan van der Meer, head of the European Commission Representation Office, has said, adding that the Commission decision on the matter is ''very important.''

    Bomb warning diverts Israel-bound Lufthansa jet to Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) - Á Lufthansa passenger jet on a flight from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv was forced to divert to Cyprus, after a bomb warning.

    Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order Doros Theodorou told CNA that, on being briefed about the incident, he granted permission for the plane to land at Larnaca Airport. A Lufthansa spokeswoman said she did not consider the warning serious.

    Cyprus mountain climbing team continues Himalayas climb

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) - A ten-member mountain climbing team from Cyprus, aiming to reach Chulu Est, one of the highest peaks of the Himalayas, has set up camp in its last base, at 4,600 metres. Chulu Est lies at 6,548 metres height.
