Cyprus FM comments on Powell's statements

Larnaca, Aug 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said that the Foreign Minister of a powerful country, like the United States, must know what is politically acceptable and what is not.

Iacovou was commenting on statements by US Secretary of State Colin Powell who had spoken about ''Turkish part of Cyprus'', apparently referring to the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

Referring to Powell's statement that he hopes for a new initiative for the Cyprus problem, Iacovou said that ''we also hope for a new initiative to solve the Cyprus problem.''

Concerning press resports suggesting that the US had applied to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to legalise direct flights to and from the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, Iacovou said that Cyprus' Permanent Representative to ICAO has discussed the issue with officials of the organisation but this has proved to be inaccurate.
