Cyprus honours those killed in 1974 to defend the Republic

Nicosia, Jul 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus remembers and pays tribute today to all those who lost their life in defence of the Republic during the 1974 military coup against the democratically-elected President of Cyprus.

The military coup against the first President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, was followed five days later by the Turkish invasion, which resulted in the illegal occupation of 37 percent of the Republic's territory and its de facto division.

The wailing of sirens was heard at 8.20 local time, the very time when the coup occurred.

A church service for those killed during the coup was held this morning at Saints Constantinos and Eleni Church in Nicosia, in the presence of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, House President Demetris Christofias, Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Christos Panagopoulos, leaders or representatives of political parties, other officials and relatives of those killed in defence of the Republic during the military coup. Interior Minister Andreas Christou addressed the ceremony.

Christou said the government and the state condemn the double crime against Cyprus and those who provoked it and honour all those who struggled and especially those killed for democracy and freedom in Cyprus.

The minister reiterated the government's commitment to reunite the state and the people in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the basis of the Annan plan so that ''all people -Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites, Latins- will be able to live peacefully and in brotherhood.''

''We do not abandon this vision. We renew our hopes and our efforts and we declare to be ready to take the big step for conciliation and compromise,'' he added.

He stressed the determination of the government to continue the struggle to reunite Cyprus and reach a final settlement of the Cyprus problem.

President Papadopoulos and other officials laid wreaths at the tombs of those killed defending the Republic.

The 56-seat House of Representatives held afterwards a special session to denounce the coup and the Turkish invasion and honour those who sacrificed their life for democracy and defending their homeland.

[07] Cyprus House denounces coup and Turkish invasion

Cyprus House denounces coup and Turkish invasion

Nicosia, Jul 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives denounced today the twin crime against the Republic of Cyprus, on the 15 July 1974 coup d' etat against the democratically elected President, Archbishop Makarios, and the Turkish invasion five days later that resulted in the occupation of the island's northern third.

The 56-member parliament held an extraordinary plenary session on the occasion, attended by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and members of his Cabinet. The House observed a one-minute silence in memory of those killed defending democracy and the country.

Addressing the plenary, House President Demetris Christofias said today's juncture is the most critical for the country's future, noting that the rejection of the Annan plan by the Greek Cypriot community, at the 24 April 2004 referendum, sealed the failure of the UN initiative for a Cyprus settlement.

Christofias noted that ''today again the problem remains stagnant and the danger of consolidating the (Turkish) occupation is visible.''

The House President called on the international community to think hard about the outcome of this initiative and think of its own possible responsibilities for the rejection of the plan by the Greek Cypriots, instead of seeking and working on ways to upgrade the pseudostate with the excuse of getting the Turkish Cypriots out of the ''isolation'' while on the same time pursuing to punish the Republic of Cyprus and exonerate Turkey.

Leftwing AKEL Parliamentary Spokesman Nicos Katsourides said that July and August are the appropriate months for a fruitful and sincere dialogue between Cyprus political leadership and between Greece and Cyprus as regards the Cyprus problem.

Katsourides noted that ''with seriousness, responsibility, courage we have to pave the way forward for the final effort that will lead to the solution on the basis of our own initiatives.''

Rightwing Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades said thirty years after the coup and the invasion ''we are faced with serious difficulties and dangers, such as the danger of an indirect recognition of the pseudostate.''

Anastasiades said now is the time ''to determine our goals and strategy, which is a necessary precondition to get away from the impediments that we continuously find in our way and to create new developments and provide real hope to our people.''

Centre-right Democratic Party Deputy President Nicos Kleanthous said this year's anniversary coincides with a period during which the Cyprus people must show resistance and not give in a solution that will finalise the double crime against Cyprus and its people.

He stressed that ''we will not allow anyone, as strong as he might be, to try and punish the Greek Cypriots, because they say 'no' to finalising this double crime.''

Socialdemocrats Movement EDEK President Yiannakis Omirou said that ''all of us must fight united to face the difficulties and give the message with a vindicating policy and a diplomatic and political campaign that erasing the most heavy responsibilities of Turkey is something unconceivable.''

He pointed out that it is unconceivable to have someone trying to attribute the responsibilities on Greek Cypriots because they exercised their inalienable right to judge the plan for a Cyprus settlement as unacceptable.

European Democracy deputy Prodromos Prodromou said the best way to keep alive the memory of the people is by ''politically vindicating the historic and courageous decision'' of the Greek Cypriots at the April 24 referendum.

Prodromou stressed the need to determine an aggressive policy pursuing a European solution to the Cyprus problem.

New Horizons deputy Christos Klerides said the European settlement of the Cyprus problem must be based on the European Constitution principles, the European Convention of Human Rights and the International Law.

Klerides said the settlement of the Cyprus problem must safeguard the rights of free movement, settlement, and choice of residence, as well as the right of all refugees to return to their homes.

United Democrats Movement deputy Androulla Vassiliou said that the two choices the Greek Cypriots have are to have a settlement soon based on the Annan plan or a solution after many years, suggesting that the Cyprus government must take advantage of the ''milestone'' of December 2004, when Turkey's demand to get a date for starting accession negotiations with the EU will be examined.

''We need a clear strategy that can be understood by our people and the international community. Initiatives are needed,'' she added.

Struggling Democratic Movement (ADIK) President Dinos Michaelides said that at this critical bend for the Cyprus problem, all must stick to the issues of principles and institutions, so that a functional, viable and European solution will be achieved.

He noted that what is needed for achieving this goal is the unity of the people, stessing that the vindication struggle should be based on solid grounds.

Environmentalists-Ecologists Movement deputy George Perdikis said that ''persistence to the principles of democracy, the ancient principles of humanism and of law leads the steps of our people today.''
