G/C who stabbed 14-year-old boy hospitalised in mental clinic

Limassol, Jul 14 (CNA) -- A 29-year-old Greek Cypriot who stabbed yesterday to death a 14 year-old boy, child of Romas, while the latter was playing with his friends on a dock at the southern town of Limassol, has been hospitalized in a mental clinic, outside the capital Nicosia.

The suspect had been covincted in the past for trafficking and using drugs and had been hospitalized from time to time to mental clinics, police said.

The family of the victim lived in Limassol until the Turkish invasion of 1974 and returned there two years ago.

The police did not exclude the possibility of the 29-year-old being under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack.

In front of the eyes of his friends, Salih was repeatedly stubbed to various parts of his body.

Cyprus police arrested the attacker, who had tried to escape jumping into the sea.

Salih was rushed to Limassol hospital, where despite the doctors' efforts he died.

The suspect was examined by a doctor who said he was a person with psychological problems, who had undertaken treatment twice in the past at the hospital's psychiatric clinic.

Cyprus Interior Minister Andreas Christou said he was appalled by this heinous crime and gave instructions to the competent authorities to help and support the victim's family.
