Cyprus Government says EU measures cultivate divisionist tendencies.

Nicosia, Jul 8 (CNA) - The Cyprus government considers that the aid and trade measures adopted Wednesday by the European Commission for the benefit of Turkish Cypriots have positive points but also elements which cultivate divisionist tendencies on the island.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, in his first comments on the package approved yesterday by the EU commission in Brussels and presented to the press by enlargement commissioner Guenther Verheugen, noted that the Cyprus government has repeatedly expressed its agreement with measures supporting the economic development of Turkish Cypriots.

He said such measures should aim at the economic integration of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities and serve the ultimate objective of reunification of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

EU direct trade regulation politically motivated, Iacovou says

Nicosia, Jul 8 (CNA) --- A proposal by the European Commission for direct trade between Brussels and Cyprus' northern Turkish-occupied areas has political motives, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said today.

''I believe that the Regulation regarding direct trade was not necessary. Brussels should have given a certain period of time, to allow the Green Line Regulation (on inter-island trade across the demarcation line dividing the country) to take effect,'' Iacovou said.

He added that additional discussions on trade matters involving the Turkish Cypriots could take place in the event that this specific regulation did not work out.
