    Turkey agrees with opening of four new air corridors in Nicosia FIR

    Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- Turkey gave its consent, for the first time, to a common proposal by Greece and Cyprus regarding the opening of four new air corridors in Nicosia FIR, two towards Greece and two towards Israel, Head of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) Foreign and International Relations Christos Petrou told CNA.

    Sierra Leone recognizes Cyprus Republic as the only state of the island

    Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) The recent visit by Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus should by no means be considered as a change of the country's policy in the Cyprus issue, according to a verbal note issued by Sierra Leone's High Commission in London.

    The note said that the Minister's visit to Cyprus' occupied areas after the 31st session of Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Foreign Ministers in Istanbul earlier this month was clearly a private one.

    Athens, Jun 30 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Defence Kyriakos Mavronicolas arrived in Athens today for an official visit at the invitation of his Greek counterpart Spilios Spiliotopoulos.

    Speaking on departure at Larnaca airport he said during talks to be held tomorrow with Spiliotopoulos ''all main issues of common interest'' would be discussed.

    Cyprus President hopes EU undertakes initiative

    Larnaca, Jun 30 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed hope that the European Union would undertake an initiative as part of efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

    He was speaking on his return from Brussels where he took part in last nights extraordinary European Council meeting.

    The Cypriot President said the Greek Cypriot side wanted the Cyprus problem to remain under the UN auspices but also wished that the European perspective could play a part in the process to find a negotiated settlement.

    Regarding his meeting in Brussels with Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen, the Cypriot President said that he expressed the governments views on economic and financial measures which the EU was preparing in support of Turkish Cypriots, adding that he made some proposals as well.

    The President said that work on the measures continued as did efforts to overcome any problems that may arise.

    Cyprus President hopes Barroso will understand small EU countries

    Larnaca, Jun 30 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said he believed that Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, who was unanimously nominated on Tuesday by EU leaders as the next head of the European Commission, will handle with more understanding problems which small EU countries are facing.

    Speaking on his return from Brussels where he attended last nights extraordinary European Council, President Papadopoulos said EU leaders have expressed satisfaction with the first statements made by Barroso in which he outlined his vision for a stronger Europe and a more functional European Commission.

    Regarding his meeting in Brussels with European Commission President Romano Prodi and Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen, the Cypriot President said that he expressed the governments views on economic and financial measures which the EU was preparing in support of the Turkish Cypriots, adding that he made some proposals as well.
