UNSG's spokesman on Annan's reports for Cyprus

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Jun 3 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's spokesman Fred Eckhard referred yesterday to the two reports issued by UN Secretary General on Cyprus, on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and on his good offices mission for Cyprus.

Eckhard said in his report to the Security Council on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus the Secretary General says he remains convinced that in the absence of a comprehensive settlement the presence of the UN Peacekeeping Force on the island continues to be necessary for the maintenance of the cease fire.''

''He goes on to say that following the watershed referenda vote of the 24th of April and as part of an overall reappraisal of the UN Peace activities in Cyprus he intends to conduct a review of the Peacekeeping Mission's mandate, force levels and concept of operations in light of developments on the ground, the positions of the parties and any views the Security Council might have,'' Eckhard added.

The spokesman said ''the Secretary General will submit to the Council within three months recommendations on the adjustments or restructuring that may be required.''

Ekchard noted that the Secretary General ''recommends that the Council extends the mission mandate for a further six months, until 15 December, 2004.''

Cyprus President says Annan report contains inaccuracies

    By Apostolis Zoupaniotis

New York, Jun 3 (CNA) -- The report submitted to the Security Council by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on his good offices mission for Cyprus contains inaccuracies, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said.

In statements to the Cyprus radio (CyBC) President Papadopoulos described as unfounded a remark by the UNSG in his report that the Greek Cypriots by rejecting the Annan Plan rejected a solution of the island's long standing political problem.

He said the government would study the report carefully and express its opinion to the UN chief and the Security Council members, who would eventually decide whether they would adopt it or not.

''From a preliminary study I note that the report contains a number of inaccuracies as regards to the facts and we certainly disagree with the Secretary General's remark for the negotiation process and his evaluation of the stance by both Cyprus sides'', President Papadopoulos said.

''We are particularly insulted and we consider as unfounded the evaluation that the Cyprus people decision to reject the plan equals to the rejection of the solution'', said the Cypriot President, stressing that the ''no'' vote expressesd by the Greek Cypriots at the 24 April referendum equals to the rejection of this specific plan'' and not to a solution.

Cyprus government critical of UN report

Nicosia, Jun 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said a UN report on the latest attempt to find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus contained many inaccuracies, misinterpreted the positions of the Greek Cypriot side and did not always present an overall picture of what had happened.

In an initial reaction to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's report, the Spokesman said the government disagreed on several counts with the analysis and the assessment of the report and he described as an ''unfair and far fetched conclusion to claim that the rejection by the Greek Cypriots of the Annan plan was in fact a rejection of either a solution or the notion of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.''

President Papadopoulos disagrees with many points in UN report

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Jun 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said he disagreed with many points of a report by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on his good offices mission, which dealt with the latest effort to find a negotiated settlement.

Speaking at a press conference after a meeting with Annan today at UN headquarters, President Papadopoulos said he would give in writing his views on the report, which was critical of Greek Cypriots who rejected Annan's plan, saying that they had in fact turned down the solution itself.

President Papadopoulos reiterated his adherence to finding a bizonal bicommunal federal solution and said the best hope for achieving this goal lay with the UN.

He said it would be wrong to suggest that this specific plan, the Annan plan, was the only way to reach such a solution.

President Papadopoulos said the economic disparity between Greek and Turkish Cypriots was due to political reasons, such as the linking of the Turkish Cypriot economy to the Turkish lira, noted the resolution of the question of Cyprus went through Ankara and stressed that the objective of the solution should not be to serve the interests of others than the people of Cyprus.

United Nations, Jun 3 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos to assist his call to all states to remove barriers to the development of Turkish Cypriots, saying such a move would testify that Greek Cypriots wanted to reach out to their compatriots.
