    IOC President to visit Cyprus

    Íicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge begins a two-day visit to the island this afternoon.

    Rogge arrivew at Larnaca at 1655 local time (1355 GMT). He will be met at Larnaca airport by Education and Culture Minister Pefkios Georgiades, Cyprus Olympic Committee President and IOC member Kikis Lazarides, and Cyprus Sports Organisation Chairman Titos Christofides.

    The IOC presidents first stop will be the Presidential Palace where he will be received by President Tassos Papadopoulos. Tonight he will give a lecture on Olympic Challenges.

    Cyprus President to participate in EU-Latin America summit, visit US

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos leaves Wednesday for Mexico for a summit of European Union leaders with their Latin America and Carribean counterparts.

    He will then go to Boston to sign an agreement with the University of Harvard to set up an international research centre in Cyprus on environmental and public health issues.

    Announcing details of the presidential trip, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said Papadopoulos leaves Wednesday morning via London for Mexico for the EU summit which will deal with multi-party effective diplomacy and social coherence and cooperation between the EU and Latin America and the Caribean.

    On May 30, Papadopoulos will go to Boston to sign the agreement. While in Boston he will also give a lecture at Kennedy School of Government on the question of Cyprus and will meet academics from Harvard University.

    President Papadopoulos will then move on to New York where on the morning of the 3 June he will meet UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- Albania supports every initiative that aims at a solution for the reunification of Cyprus, where the full will of the interested parties and the general tendency for the European integration of Cyprus as a whole will be reflected, the country's new Ambassador in Nicosia Bashkim Zeneli said today, presenting his credentials to the Cypriot President.

    Government sees improvement in approach to crossings

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government believes that the situation with regard to free movement to and from the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic is improving.

    ''The crossing by Greek Cypriots of the demarcation line is moving towards improvement, even though the demand to show an identity card will still be in place,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, adding that the government wished to see full freedom of movement for all Cypriot citizens throughout the Republic and wanted to have the Turkish occupation ended with a political settlement and the reunification of the country.

    International Olympic Committee President arrives in Cyprus

    Larnaca, May 25 (CNA) - President of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge arrived in Cyprus this afternoon, satisfied with the progress Athens has made towards hosting the 2004 Olympic Games to be held in August.

    Speaking on arrival at Larnaca Airport, Rogge said ''major progress'' had been made in Athens in view of the Olympic Games, noting that ''there is of course a lot to do.''

    ''There are actually 66 days left until the opening of the Olympic Village and 80 days until the opening of the Olympic Games but everything that we have studied and watched indicates that there is enough time to finish everything in due time,'' he pointed out.

    Replying to questions about the security of the Olympic Games, Rogge said ''everything presumably possible has been put in place, no one can guarantee 100 percent security but I can guarantee that Greece together with seven major countries, who are helping them, have really put in a tremendous effort.''

    Larnaca, May 25 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said today that the Republic of Cyprus, with the support of Greece, was making efforts to improve some of the provisions of a resolution adopted by senior officials of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Jeddah, noting however that Cyprus did not have any access to Constantinople (Istanbul), venue of the Conference, which ''really makes things difficult.''

    Nicosia, May 25 (CNA) - Greece, with the help of seven other countries, has put in place the best ever effort to serve the security of the Olympic Games, President of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge said today.

    Speaking after a meeting with President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, Rogge said he believed Athens would be ready to host the Olympic Games in August, and pointed out that the Committee's experts have indicated that there was enough time to complete all pending work.
