    Cyprus President: international legality and EU law must be observed

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said the Greek Cypriot side's effort is for the international legality and the EU law to be observed.

    Answering to a question on efforts by other counties to lift the so-called embargo against the Turkish occpuation regime, Papadopoulos told the press last night that ''everything is under discussion and the effort is for the international legality and the EU law that protects us to be observed''.

    Greek PM: new Cyprus initiative must be undertaken

    United Nations, May 19 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis believes that the outcome of a referendum in Cyprus on a UN-proposed solution plan is not the end of the process for a political settlement, pointing out that everybody involved in the problem agree that the final goal is the reunification of the island.

    He was speaking at a press conference after a meeting here with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who said in a statement that all parties must reflect on the point reached in the peace process and that the Security Council will review the situation and future prospects.

    Papadopoulos highlights goal of Cyprus settlement

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has underlined that he was seeking a political settlement on the basis of a UN proposal for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, adding that certain amendments should be made to the proposal to address Greek Cypriot concerns.

    ''I wish to confirm our steady policy to achieve a solution through negotiations and to reaffirm our defined strategy for talks on the basis of the Annan plan for a bizonal bicommunal federation, having achieved the necessary improvements that will address the concerns and worries of the Greek Cypriots,'' he said, at the swearing in ceremony of three Cabinet ministers.

    Asked about reports for a meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in early June, he said part of the effort to push for a settlement was to maintain talks under UN auspices.

    Three new Ministers sworn in today

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- Three new members of Cabinet were sworn in today at a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

    The three Ministers, Minister of Finance Iacovos Keravnos, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Christos Taliadoros and Minister of Communications and Works Charis Thrasou gave the prescribed affirmation in the presence of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and other members of the Cabinet.

    President Papadopoulos congratulated the new Ministers and wished them hard work and good luck for the serious and very important task that awaits them.

    Speaking on behalf of the new Ministers, Keravnos thanked President Papadopoulos and assured him they would make every effort to fully perform their duties and be worthy of the Presidents expectations.

    Strasbourg, May 19 (CNA) -- Cypriot House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias met in Strasbourg today with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Peter Schieder to whom he conveyed the position of the Greek Cypriot side for the need to continue efforts with a view to achieve a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    Armenian Foreign Minister arrives in Cyprus for working visit

    Larnaca, May 19 (CNA) -- Armenia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Vartan Oskanian arrived in Cyprus for a two-day working visit, during which he will be received by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Speaking on his arrival, Oskanian said that during talks tomorrow with his Cypriot counterpart George Iacovou, ''we will discuss and address bilateral ties between Cyprus and Armenia.''
