    Greek Premier to discuss Cyprus in US

    Athens, May 12 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will discuss the question of Cyprus during next week's meetings in New York and Washington.

    Karamanlis will be in the US from May 17-21, at the invitation of President George Bush.

    On Tuesday, he will meet UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in New York, days before the Secretary General issues his report on latest developments in Cyprus, including the failed attempt to get through a referendum among Greek and Turkish Cypriots a UN proposal for a comprehensive settlement.

    Discussions between Annan and Karamanlis will focus on prospects for a renewed effort for a solution, on Turkey's European prospects, developments in Iraq and the Middle East, according to reliable sources.

    London, May 12 (CNA) -- Britain continues to believe the UN Secretary General's proposals offer the best prospect for a fair, just and viable future for Cyprus, British Minister of State Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean has said, adding that ''we see no other possible basis for a settlement.''

    Cyprus President collapses during funeral service

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos collapsed while attending a funeral at St. John Cathedral in the capital but his close aides said there was no reason for concern.

    President Papadopoulos was attending the funeral service of Cyprus Church head chanter, Theodoros Kallinikos when witnesses said he collapsed unconscious.

    After regaining consciousness, the President walked to the Presidential car and was driven to Nicosia General Hospital.

    Acting Government Spokesman Marios Karoyan said the President would probably remain in hospital overnight as a precautionary measure.

    Cyprus Presidents condition normal, medical report says

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos health is normal, a medical report issued here Wednesday said after preliminary exams on the President who collapsed during a funeral service earlier this afternoon.

    The report, was read by director of the Cardiac Department of the Nicosia General hospital, Dr. Costas Zambartas in the presence of the cardiologist Charis Fessas, the Presidents personal doctor.

    The President, according to the report, is in good spirits and his condition does not raise any reason for concern.

    A number of ministers arrived at the hospital following the news of the Presidents collapse at the funeral service of Cyprus Church head chanter, Theodoros Kallinikos.

    Government committee in Brussels for EU crossing regulation

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) A government committee is in Brussels to hold talks with EU representatives on the various issues raised by the implementation of the European Union Regulation on crossings of the Green Line.

    Acting Government Spokesman Marios Karoyan the governments position is that the method of implementation of the regulation should safeguard the legality and interests of the EU and the people of Cyprus as a whole.

    Nicosia, May 12 (CNA) Acting Foreign Minister Andreas Christou will receive European Council President, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern instead of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos who is recovering in hospital after collapsing earlier this afternoon.

    EU Council President Ahern arrives in Cyprus for brief visit

    Larnaca, May 12 (CNA) European Council President, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said the people of Cyprus have decided in last months referendum and now it was time to move on.

    Ahern was speaking during his arrival on the island where he is scheduled to hold talks with Acting Foreign Minister Andreas Christou.

    He said it was the wish of the EU that on the 1st of May a united Cyprus would join the EU but ultimately, it was a matter for the people, and the people have decided and now we move on.

    On his part, Christou said thanked the Irish Premier for his countrys firm support during the islands accession process.
