Speaking to the foreign press one day after the rejection by the Greek Cypriot side of a UN plan for a comprehensive settlement, President Papadopoulos stressed that a set of measures which the European Commission intended to announce tomorrow should be given to the Turkish Cypriots only.

Statement by the President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos

Nicosia, Apr 25 (CNA) -- The rejection of the Annan Plan was no victory for anyone, said here Sunday Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, stressing that the future of the country belonged to all irrespective of the way they had voted in yesterdays referenda in which the Greek Cypriot side rejected a UN plan for a political settlement.

He said any difference of opinion prior to the referendum should be followed by unity in order to secure a better tomorrow in a reunited country and added that Greek and Turkish Cypriots deserved a better future.

President Papadopoulos stressed that any interventions aimed at influencing the outcome of the referendum did not originate from within Cyprus, but from abroad through statements calculated at instigating sentiments of fear, insecurity and uncertainty among the voters.

Cyprus President says measures for T/C to be announced tomorrow (2)

Nicosia, Apr 25 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said today the government would announce tomorrow at the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg measures to enable Turkish Cypriots to enjoy the benefit of Cyprus accession to the EU.

Speaking during a press conference to the foreign press one day after the rejection of the Annan Plan by the Greek Cypriot side, President Papadopoulos said that a set of measures which the European Commission also intended to announce should be given to the Turkish Cypriots only and added that there should not be any question of recognition of the illegal regime in the occupied north of Cyprus.

The Cypriot President said although he did not believe there would be a new round of talks in the next weeks as people need time to reflect and analyze what went wrong, there will be a new initiative noting that we all want talks under UN auspices.

He said he wanted to start negotiations on a limited number of issues which did not necessarily take away the rights of Turkish Cypriots and said that the Annan Plan would not fade away or disappear.

The Cypriot President said he intended to work very, very hard to explain the Cypriot no to other countries, noting it was neither arbitrary or unjustified. He said he would send special emissaries to many capitals to explain the positions of Cyprus.
