Russia vetoes US-British backed resolution on Cyprus

United Nations, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Russia blocked last night a Security Council resolution on Cyprus, supported by the US and Britain, saying this was done for ''technical reasons'', meaning a disagreement on the procedure for the adoption of the resolution.

The draft was put forward three days only before a referendum in Cyprus, among Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, on a UN proposal for a political settlement, the Annan plan.

United Nations, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Russia, which vetoed a Security Council resolution on Cyprus ahead of a crucial vote on Saturday on a UN solution plan, said the matters included in the draft, such as an arms embargo and the operation of a renewed and strengthened UN operation, necessitated thorough discussion.

The result of the voting was 14 in favour to 1 against (Russian Federation). The draft was not adopted, owing to the negative vote by a permanent member of the Council.

Britain and the US, the co-sponsors of the resolution, expressed disappointment at this development, saying that the resolution would have provided security assurances to the Cypriot people that the proposed UN settlement would be in place before 24 April, when a referendum will take place among Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

AKEL maintains ''no'' position to UN plan

Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus' largest party and government partner, leftwing AKEL, said today that it would vote against a UN plan for a solution, to be put to separate referenda among Greek and Turkish Cypriots on Saturday.

AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias told a press conference that AKEL's rejection of the proposed plan was not the same as that of others who oppose the Annan plan.

Nicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Friday and Saturday: 23/04/2004 to 24/04/2004 -------------------- On Friday, the weather will be mainly fine in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon with some local shower. On Saturday, the weather will be ìainly fine with some local cloud.

The winds will be southwesterly to westerly, 3 to 4 BF locally 5 BF. The state of sea slight to moderate. Temperatures will maximum 24C inland, 20-22C over the coast and over Prodromos 12-14 C. Minimum 11-13 C inland, 13-15 C over the coast and over Prodromos 3-5C.

Brussels, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus should seize the chance for reunification, Member of the European Parliament and President of the EU-Cyprus Delegation Mechtild Rothe has stated on the occasion of the debate Wednesday in the Parliament on the proposal by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for a settlement to the long-standing problem of the island.

In a press release issued today Rothe said she was happy ''that the European Parliament has sent a clear message to all Cypriots in order to accept reunification on the basis of the Annan plan'' at the separate referenda on 24th April on the adoption of the Annan plan.

UN chief says international community behind Cyprus people

United Nations, Apr 22 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said today that, although Russia vetoed the Security Council resolution on Cyprus for technical reasons, the message that should go out to the people of Cyprus is that the international community, through the Security Council, stands by them and will support the effort to reach a settlement.
