    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 20/04/2004 to 21/04/2004 -------------------- On Tuesday, the weather will be partly cloudy. Chance of light rain in some areas on Tuesday afternoon. Rain showers are expected locally on Wednesday.

    The winds will be starting southwesterly and gradually backing to easterly, gentle to moderate breezes. The slight to moderate. Temperatures will range from 25 C inland 20 to 22 over the coast and 17 C over Prodromos.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 22/04/2004 to 23/04/2004 ------------------------------ Periods of clear skies will alternate with periods of cloudy skies. Local showers of rain are expected. The temperature will gradually fall by 2-3 degrees C.

    Greek Cypriots to vote on Annan plan on April 24 Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) - A total of 479,551 Greek Cypriot voters go to the polls on Saturday, April 24, in a referendum to say ''Yes'' or ''No'' to a Cyprus settlement plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The number includes 392 people enclaved in the Turkish-occupied areas of the Republic. The respective number of voters in the February 2003 presidential elections was 476,345. The current list does not include persons who have deceased in the meantime. For the purposes of the referendum, the government-controlled areas of the Republic are to be considered a single polling district. The voters by district are as follows, with those at the presidential elections in brackets: Nicosia : 197,306 (195,658) Limassol : 135,041 (134,041) Larnaca : 79,108 ( 79,391) Paphos : 42,022 ( 41,822) Free area of Famagusta: 25,682 ( 25,433) Furthermore, 392 enclaved persons and Maronites are registered voters. The voters of Turkish-occupied Kyrenia district will be counted in the districts where they have set up residence. A total of 1,077 polling stations will operate, two of which for the enclaved persons. The polling stations by district are: Nicosia : 414 Limassol : 323 Larnaca : 169 Paphos : 119 Free area of Famagusta: 50 The ballot will be of a greyish-green colour. It will read ''PLAN OF THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL FOR THE COMPREHENSIVE SETTLEMENT OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM'' and further down the Greek Cypriots will be asked the following, as is written in annex É× of the Foundation Agreement: ''Do you approve the Foundation Agreement with all its Annexes, as well as the constitution of the Greek Cypriot State and the provisions as to the laws to be in force, to bring into being a new state of affairs in which Cyprus joins the European Union united?'' At the bottom of the ballot there will be two boxes, one for YES and one for NO. The voter will be asked to select one of the two by noting ''v'' or ''x'' or ''+''. Polling stations will open at 0700 local time and close at 1700, with a one-hour break from 1200 until 1300. Ballots will be counted on the spot and the result is expected to be announced an hour after the polling stations close. The electronic processing of the results has been assigned to ''Vavel'' company, which will feed the results to www.demopsifisma2004.net and the webpage of the Press and Information Office www.moi.gov.cy. Former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior Kyriacos Triantafyllides has been appointed Chief Returning Officer for the Referendum and his headquarters will be the International Conference Centre in Nicosia. The district officers have been appointed returning officers for their respective districts. A total of 5,000 civil servants and 2,500 police officers will be on duty on April 24, with a further 500 staff on call in various services, such as the Fire Department and hospitals. From Thursday midnight onwards and until the end of the referendum, political gatherings and other events related to the referendum are forbidden.

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus Harmonisation Coordinator Takis Hadjidemetriou has announced today his decision to resign from his post.

    Hadzidemetriou has sent his resignation letter this morning to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.
