UN SG welcomes Security Council pledge to help all parties

United Nations, 17 Apr (CNA) United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomed the willingness of the Security Council to help all parties fully meet their commitments under the proposed comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem if that blueprint is approved in referenda on 24 April.

Powell urges Cypriots to see advantages of approving Annan plan

Washington Apr 17 (CNA) --- US Secretary of State Colin Powell has urged Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to think about the advantages of a ''yes'' vote at the 24th of April referenda on the UN Secretary Generals plan for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.

He also reassured that the US, the UN and the EU would ensure the implementation of the Annan plan and make sure that all parties abide by all its elements plan and fully meet their obligations.

Interviewed by Greek and Turkish channels, Mega TV, Antenna TV, CNN Turk and ATV Turkey, Powell reiterated that the plan is balanced and constitutes a compromise for both communities.

Moscow, Apr 17 (CNA) - Russia does not object to shifting the date of the Cyprus referenda provided both the Cypriot sides agree to it, Alexander Yakovenko, official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a RIA Novosti interview on Friday.
