    United Nations, Mar 9 (CNA) -- The United Nations hopes that the negotiations for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem based on the Secretary-Generals plan will conclude successfully.

    Washington, Mar 9 (CNA) -- In a letter congratulating newly-elected Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, US President George Bush is expected to reaffirm the continuation of excellent relations between Washington and Athens.

    Sources in Washington told CNA that in his letter to be sent to Karamanlis, the US President will stress the need for cooperation between the two countries in order to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's plan so as to allow a united Cyprus to become an EU member by 1 May 2004.

    Brussels, Mar 9 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Finance Markos Kyprianou participated today in the ECOFIN Council, which discussed preparations for the Brussels Spring European Council and VAT reduction on certain products and services.

    The Ministers examined the final texts to be submitted to the Brussels Council that is expected to deal with employment and competition issues. The documents adopted today refer to the necessity to continue reforms in the labour market to make it more flexible, to enhance investment and to improve competitiveness.
