Tripartite meeting in New York to discuss Cyprus begins

United Nations, Feb 12 (CNA) - A tripartite meeting between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides, in the presence of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, began here today, the third such meeting in as many days. The meeting started with a delay of about two hours, during which the delegations met separately with Annan, according to sources.

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash are in New York following an invitation by Annan to meet in a bid to resume negotiations with a view at finding a negotiated settlement before Cyprus joins the European Union in May this year.

Papadopoulos is accompanied by former Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, the Director of his Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis and the Republic's permanent representative to the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis.

Denktash is at the talks with the so-called prime minister Mehmet Ali Talat, Serdar Denktash (his son) and self-styled foreign minister and his advisor Ergun Olgun.
