Britain urges all Cyprus sides to meet Annan's requirements

London, Jan 23 (CNA) -- The British government is urging all sides to meet the UN Secretary General's requirements for a resumption of negotiations for a Cyprus settlement, British Minister for Europe Dennis MacShane has said, adding that the prospects of a divided Cyprus, even within the EU, are far less certain, and almost certainly worse, than the prospects of a reunited Cyprus.

Addressing a gathering last night in London of the National Federation of Cyprus in the UK, MacShane noted that there are ''signs from Ankara that Turkey too realises that the clock is ticking loudly now'', adding that ''if Attarurk could switch the Ottoman Arab alphabet to European letters in one month, it should not be impossible for the Turkish government, army and parliament to move forward to a Cyprus settlement between now and May 1st.''

Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) -- Now is the time for action on Cyprus, pledged European Enlargement Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, noting the status quo in Cyprus will damage everyone whereas a solution would be a clear win-win situation for Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and Europe as a whole.

In an article written by Verheugen and published in the ''Financial Times'', entitled A final chance to bridge the Cyprus divide'', he said he is convinced there is a window of opportunity to reach a solution before enlargement, noting the signs are promising.

Luxembourg's Prime Minister to pay official visit to Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) -- Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean-Claude Juncker will pay a three-day official visit to Cyprus, January 25-27, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Lydie Polfer and other officials.

Juncker arrives on the island on Sunday at 1835 local time (1635 GMT). He will be received at Larnaca Airport by Acting Foreign Minister, Minister of Interior Andreas Christou.

Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos was briefed on Thursday by Irish Premier and current President of the European Council Bertie Ahern on matters relating to the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC).

Papadopoulos gave Ahern an in depth briefing about the latest developments in efforts to resume the stalled peace talks.

Turkey seeks a solution based on the ''realities'' in Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) - The Turkish National Security Council convened today in a four-hour meeting and decided that it would be useful to resume negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, noting that a twice-revised solution plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan could be used as a reference.

''As it has been announced to the public, Turkey continues its support of the good offices mission of the UN Secretary General. Turkey, by taking the Annan plan as reference, reiterates its political determination for a speedy approach through negotiations for a solution based on the realities on the island'', the statement reads.

United Nations, Jan 23 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said today that he was in the hands of the sides involved in the Cyprus problem and was waiting to see how things would develop.

Asked on his way to the venue of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, if he expected a breakthrough on Cyprus, Annan said ''I think breakthrough is a big word''.
