Cyprus House President addresses 17th CSPOC

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot side has been struggling for the last thirty years to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and the continuing occupation, House President Demetris Christofias has told the 17th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference (CSPOC), in Canada, on ''The role of parliament in promoting the cohesion of the country''.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Tuesday and Wednesday: 13/01/2004 to 14/01/2004 -------------------- The weather will gradually, towards the end period, become mainly fine.

On Tuesday, local showers or thunderstorms are expected mainly over the east part of the island while snowshowers are likely over the mountains. The wind will prevail southwest to west 3 to 4 but over the windward areas temporarily during afternoon it will reach 5 bf. The state of sea will generally be moderate to rough.

The temperatures will range from 14 inland, to 16 over the coastal areas while over the mountains it will reach 6 degrees.

On Wednesday, sunny intervals and local cloud are expected while showers are likely. The wind will prevail southwest to west 3 to 4 bf and the state of sea will be generally moderate. The minimum temperature will range from 2 over the mountains to 6 inland and to 8 over the coastal areas, while the maximum will be around 16 degrees inland and over the coastal areas and around 8 over the mountains.

Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 15/01/2004 to 16/01/2004

On Thursday the weather will be mainly fine and the temperature is not expected to note any change.

The weather on Friday will gradually become mainly cloudy with local showers and thunderstorms. The temperature will remain without any change.

IMF senior official respects Cyprus for ''doing so well''

Nicosia, Jan 9 (CNA) -- A senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official has praised Cyprus for securing, through hard work, European Union membership but recommended a strategy that would not only reduce deficit but also maintain it at low levels.

Jeroen Kremers, IMF Executive Director, believes that Cyprus can join the euro once the deficit drops below three per cent, thinks entry into the EU does not necessarily mean bad times for the island's offshore sector and sees EU directives as a means to help the country's Stock Exchange introduce better practices on the supervision of financial markets.

Kremers, who represents the Cyprus authorities on the IMF board and is one of the 24 board members, visited Cyprus to get to know the people and issues that relate to the country's economy.

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus is 14th internationally regarding the degree of economic freedom, according to the 2004 Index of Economic Freedom, issued by the Washington research centre ''Heritage Foundation'' and the Wall Street Journal. Last year, Cyprus was listed 22nd.

PACE delegate: EU accession to bring confidence and solution

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) -- The accession of Cyprus to the EU will bring confidence to both communities on the island and thus enable them to reach a lasting solution to the Cyprus issue, rapporteur of the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Matyas Eorsi, stressed here today.

Eorsi, who arrived here yesterday for a five-day visit, expressed satisfaction with the fact that ''everybody on the island is ready to relaunch the negotiations on Cyprus, based on the Annan plan, and both the government and the opposition is in full harmony on this point''.

AUCTION RESULTS OF TREASURY BILLS ISSUED ON 12.1.2004

An auction was held on 12.1.2004 for the sale by the Central

Bank of Cyprus, for and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, of upto £40.000.000 Treasury Bills with

date of issue 12.1.2004 and 52 weeks maturity. The total value of the bids submitted was £35.040.000. The competitive bids amounted to £30.000.000 and the non-competitive bids to £5.040.000. All bids submitted were accepted. The lowest and highest prices of the competitive bids accepted were £961,28 and £962,65 respectively for every £1.000 nominal value, representing annual yields of 4,05% and 3,90% respectively. In accordance with the published terms of the auction non-competitive bids amounting to £5.040.000 were accepted at the weighted average price of the accepted competitive bids. This price was £962,20 per £1.000 nominal value representing an annual yield of 3,95%.

President announces National Employment Commission

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos announced today the formation of the National Employment Commission. The announcement came after a meeting he presided over, in the presence of the social partners, which reviewed developments during the year 2003 in the labour market, as well as the general unemployment situation on the island.

Speaking during a press conference with Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Iacovos Keravnos, President Papadopoulos said ''the social partners are expected to play an active and determining role from now on in defining, forming and implementing the national employment policy''.

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that conflicting statements from the Turkish side were confusing and thus one should wait for the Turkish policy to be clarified in order to see the stance Ankara will maintain and judge whether or not there will be any prospects of promoting efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

President to receive Annan's reply tomorrow

Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said today that he would be receiving a reply from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan tomorrow to a letter sent on December 17 to Annan, asking him to call talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

He added that there is time for a settlement by May 1st, when Cyprus joins the European Union, if the necessary political will is shown, and expressed the Greek Cypriot side's readiness to go to talks whenever the UN chief calls them.
