    Cyprus President issues Christmas pardons for 81 prisoners

    Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos issued yesterday Christmas pardons for 81 inmates at the Nicosia central prisons, chosen by the Attorney General Solon Nikitas and his advisors from a list of prisoners forwarded to Nikitas by the Justice Ministry. A total of 55 of the released are foreigners and 26 Cypriots.

    Britain stresses need for resumption of Cyprus talks

    London, Dec 23 (CNA) -- British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane has stressed the need for the resumption of negotiations on the basis of the UN Secretary General's plan for a Cyprus settlement as soon as possible.

    Greek Cypriot side ready to assist exhumations in occupied areas

    Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) - The government is ready to assist the process of exhumation of remains of persons listed as missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion, believed to have been buried in northern occupied Cyprus, President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos said today.

    Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has said he hopes to see the UN-led peace talks resume in the new year, adding that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will reply to his letter at the appropriate time.

    Turkish Cypriots working in free areas quadruple

    Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Iacovos Keravnos has told CNA that the number of Turkish Cypriots working in the free areas of the Republic and registered in the Social Insurance Scheme has almost quadrupled, noting this proves that ''the Ministry's measures to facilitate the employment of Turkish Cypriots have been effective''.

    Keravnos said that there are currently 1.456 Turkish Cypriots working in the government controlled areas of the Republic and registered in the Scheme, compared to a mere 400 before the easing of restrictions on free movement to and from the Turkish occupied areas.

    Cabinet discusses visa matters for Russians

    Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) - The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus concluded today the framework of agreements with the Russian Federation on visa matters.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said after this afternoon's meeting that the Cabinet mainly discussed ''the issue of an agreement on diplomatic and service passports''.
