EU partners continue deliberations

Brussels, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, current European Council president, continues his bilateral contacts with European leaders in a bid to reach agreement on the proposed constitution for Europe.

The Intergovernmental Conference resumes its deliberations later today.

UN peace-keepers die in road accident

Nicosia, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Two UN peace-keepers, serving with the Argentine contingent of UNFICYP, were killed Friday and one was seriously injured when their patrol vehicle feel down a cliff, in the western district of Paphos.

Cyprus and Malta meet Berlusconi

Brussels, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos together with Malta's Premier Fenech Adami met with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi here today, in the framework of bilateral meetings the European Union Italian Presidency has been having with regard to the Intergovernmental Conference on the European Constitution.

Foreign Minister: non agreement on EU constitution not the end

Brussels, Dec 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said here today that the conclusion of the Intergovernmental Conference without an agreement on the first European Constitution is not the end, noting that improvements have been made to the draft.

He expressed satisfaction with the fact that the enlargement of the European Union is by no means affected and noted the efforts made by the Italian presidency of the EU to achieve an agreement in a very limited period.

''What is important for us is that Cyprus' EU accession is not affected,'' Iacovou told CNA, adding that the positions the government had advocated for one Commissioner with equal rights and responsibilities for each state as well as the number of European Parliament deputies as agreed in Nice have gained support from many countries.

The Minister expressed hope that eventually the necessary consensus will be reached as the proposed constitution has been improved and noted that there have been many improvements to the draft.
