Cyprus President unveils 7-year strategic plan for tourism

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- President Tassos Papadopoulos has unveiled a seven-year strategic plan to boost tourism, which he said has the general consent of all interested parties and was adopted unanimously at a meeting here today, and pledged his government's commitment to see the plan through and implement it within the set timeframe.

Speaking at a press conference after a lengthy meeting with parties involved, President Papadopoulos said the ''tourist road map'', charted out by the various ministries, aims to ensure that the country's economy is no longer dependent on tourism, without at the same time diminishing the importance of the tourist product and its contribution to the local economy.

He said the Cyprus Tourism Organisation will be restructured to oversee the implementation of the strategic plan and added that a ministerial commission will be responsible to review developments in tourism and be accountable to the Cabinet. An Advisory Committee made up of representatives of various factors involved in the tourist industry will also help in this direction.

Irish Premier to consult with President Papadopoulos

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern arrives here Wednesday night for a flying visit during which he will hold discussions with President Tassos Papadopoulos on Thursday morning, before leaving.

The premier, heading an eight-member delegation, is on a tour of acceding countries to the European Union, ahead of his country's EU six-monthly rotating presidency beginning January 2004.

It is understood that Cyprus' forthcoming accession to the EU, in May next year, and efforts to resume the stalled UN peace talks will be part of the discussions.

Cyprus Foreign Minister meets Commonwealth SG

London, Nov 4 (CNA) The Commonwealth is considering the best ways its position on Cyprus can be included in the conclusions of its forthcoming summit in Nigeria, said here Tuesday Secretary-General Don McKinnon after a meeting with Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou.

In his statements after the meeting, McKinnon said they had a very good discussion during which the minister gave the Secretariat a very clear update of the situation.

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) President Tassos Papadopoulos has said the government would gladly pay the cost of any unfavourable repercussions on the economy, following the partial lifting of restrictions on the freedom of movement to and from the island's Turkish occupied areas, as part of the effort for rapprochement between the two communities, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Speaking at a press conference in which he unveiled a seven-year strategic plan for tourism, the President said that one of the issues raised following the partial lifting of restrictions on the freedom of movement is the overnight stays in the occupied areas.

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) President Tassos Papadopoulos has said that a seven-year strategic plan on tourism, announced here Tuesday, aims at boosting tourism, improving the tourist product and bringing Cyprus back to the map as an attractive tourist destination.

Speaking at a press conference, the President also said that the Cyprus Tourism Organisation will undertake to oversee the implementation of the plan, which aims to attract tourists of a higher income or specialised tourism.''
