    UN expert arrives in Cyprus for demining procedure

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- A UN expert has arrived in Cyprus with a view to contribute to the procedure for the destruction of mines by the Cyprus government, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides announced here today.

    ''Our position is that irrelevant of what the occupying power (Turkey) says demining will begin unilaterally by our side,'' the Spokesman said, noting that the whole process will begin with the destruction of mines that are in the National Guard's store houses.

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- More than 10.000 people rallied today in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the divided capital, Nicosia, protesting against Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's policy to include thousands of settlers in the so-called voting lists and expressing their support to a Cyprus settlement based on the Annan plan, so that a reunited Cyprus can join the EU by May 1, 2004.

    The rally accompanied by a general strike in the occupied Nicosia was organised by Turkish Cypriot political parties and trade unions forming the platform ''This country is ours''.

    Luxembourg, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos arrived here today for an official two-day visit.

    Luxembourg's Chief of protocol Marc Courte and Luxembourg's Ambassador to Cyprus welcomed him at the airport where a red carpet was laid and the President inspected a guard of honour.

    Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou and Cyprus' Ambassadress to Belgium, also accredited in Luxembourg, Popi Avraam were also present at the airport.

    Tonight Avraam will host a dinner for President Papadopoulos.

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andreas Mavroyiannis protested in a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan ''the latest provocative attempts to suppress free speech and expression in the occupied part of Cyprus and silence those voices within the Turkish Cypriot community in favour of a solution of the Cyprus problem and peaceful coexistence of the two communities in a reunited Cyprus.''
